Hello Sandbox!

Posting here isn't something that I often do, but I have noticed people here are a lil more artistically inclined than the other lobbies, and are also more engaging and fun to talk to so I've decided to make this thread here.

At any rate, this is a long-term project created by someone who obsessed with film! It's Basil's Film Journal

Basically I'm going to list the films that I want to watch and organize them, and might post a hot take or two about movies I have recently seen. I hope to have written my first script by the end of college!

i feel like i’ve made my case for la la land and I stand by my opinion but we can agree to disagree
deletedover 6 years
honestly any time i feel myself sinking into a pit of depression, i think about the time at the 89th academy awards when moonlight won best picture after the entire cast and crew of la la land believed that their film had won best picture. it reminds me that the world is good.

the plot of la la land is boring and honestly? kind of White Saviour-y and its weird but the movie does look like a dream. however the musical aspect of it doesnt even save it (i love musicals and i know this was Not good) because the songs are mediocre and also they couldve put any white girl next to ryan gosling and called it a day. mediocre movie , noah fence

i also absolutely despise quantum tarantostito though so you dont have to listen to my movie opinions seeing as your favourite movie is pulp fiction and i wouldnt even put that in my top 1000

la la land is Really Bad.

but it wasn't a good romance and it was barely a musical

i disagree on both counts, I think it has just the right amount of both and it managed to do something really fresh with them

on the account of it being a “bad romance,” well, the movie isn’t really even about the romance. gosling and stone definitely gave in some great performances, but they aren’t a “Before trilogy” tier romantic couple where everything is realistic and beautiful and immersive cause the movie is about their dreams moreso than their relationship. the relationship itself would’ve made the movie too drawn out and unsure of itself if it was expanded the way it is in most “cannon” romantic movies

as for it being barely a musical, I thought it had just the right amount. the music was catchy and unforgettable, the choreography impressive (holy hell that intro number is phenomenal) and it progressed the narrative well and never imposed on it. also it revitalized a dying genre in a way, cause no one really cares much for musical film in 2017 and yet la la land captivated so many with its music

also I gotta add in that u can not deny the melancholy and beauty of that final sequence (and final shot)

idk the movie just struck a cord with me in a lot of ways as someone who dreams of being a filmmaker and I love it

im unapologetic about this

but seriously why do so many people have gripes with this movie? I really loved it but then again I’m a sucker for a good romance movie and I’m a sucker for musicals

I absolutely love the visual storytelling of that movie most of all and you can not deny how beautiful the movie looks

ppl just got irked that the academy went head over heals for it

why did you rate moonrise kingdom the same as kung fu panda
i just want to talk

LMAO THIS ACTUALLY MADE ME LAUGH I don’t honestly recall doing this, Kung fu panda is definitely not on the same level

but tbh moonrise kingdom was where Wes Anderson kinda lost me compared to his other movies, and it’s hard for me to really pinpoint why because it is, from a technical standpoint amazing. I love wes anderson camera pans and the humor and the pretentiousness of it all but that movie just didn’t hit home with me like Grand Budapest did

dunkirk should be in that poll, probably best 2017 movie ive seen (along with Get Out)

while the camera work was honestly jaw dropping, and I left the theater really loving it, something about it hasn’t left a long lasting effect on me the same way other 2017 movies did
