I know someone did this a year ago but I liked it and I don't think the thread is around anymore.

Here's how you play: Someone posts a riddle, whoever gets it right gets to post their own riddle, and it continues that way.

Try not to Google the answers, or it won't be any fun! Also, try not to post 2 riddles or more every day to allow everyone a chance to try to answer them!

You only have the two rods on you, and Staples is closed atm :/.

You have two metal rods that don't seem to be distinguishable normally (same color, weight, texture, etc.). However, you've been told that only one rod is magnetic. Is there a way to tell them apart?

Say the magnetic rod is uniformly magnetic and strong.

You put a magnet next to both of them and the magnetic one will stick to the magnet?

so you googled the problem and didn't account for the change in speed that i wrote down in my statement of it

lol

anyway here's the solution:

consider when two ants collide. because of the mechanics of the collision, it's the same as if the ants just walked through each other. therefore the problem is equivalent to just having each ant walk along the meter stick at a constant speed, which means the longest time that it would take is for one ant at the very end to walk to the other end, which would take 1 second using the numbers in my formulation

1 minute

let me rephrase:

over all possible initial configurations of the ants on the meter stick what is the maximum amount of time that it would take for all the ants to fall off?

this is the formal way of putting it but it sounded too imposing for the initial post

the boy was dead the whole time

1 meter per second is stupid fast for an ant is it on steroids

wouldn't the position of the ants matter

ants don't fall

we have 100 ants on a meter stick. each ant moves either left or right at 1 m/s.

when two ants collide, they both change directions (instantaneously) and start moving in the other direction at the same speed.

how long will it take for all of the ants to fall off of the meter stick?

Maybe it's one of those riddles with an intentionally dumb answer like "the mom was already dead that's why the dad had a new girlfriend"

Or maybe the dad's girlfriend and the boy's mom were in a car together for some reason and that happened to be the car the dad crashed into.

something about the mother being pregnant with the child during the crash?

In the other car I suppose?

A man crashes his car with his son inside and then he dies. The son walks to the hospital and asks for an operation and the doctor says "we need your parents' permission to do that" and the son says "but both of my parents are dead :-(".

Where was the boy's mother and the father's girlfriend (they weren't married yet)?

o miguel beat me

u can mouse over my thing for an explanation if you didn't understand the solution tho

choose any 5 coins from the 50 and flip them. this pile and the leftover pile have the same number of heads.

reasoning: suppose the 5 coins have n heads, where 0 <= n <= 5. then the original pile now has (5 - n) heads. when you flip the 5 coins you picked, it now has (5 - n) heads

this obviously generalizes

oh i have a fun riddle

suppose you have 50 quarters on a desk.

5 of the quarters are resting with the heads side up. the other 45 are resting tails facing up.

you cannot see or feel the texture of the quarters to tell which side the quarter has up.

find a way to split the 50 quarters into two piles such that the number of quarters with heads facing up in both piles is the same number.

Well if you flip one of the quarters you'll either have 4 or 6 heads up, which is an even number

After that I had no idea

Make one pile of 45 and a pile of 5 and just flip every coin in the 5 pile

i just looked up the answer and i think this is a bad riddle lol

ye it's weird and i dont get the mail part :/

i'm guessing it's their gills? the way the gills are shaped is a bit similar to the way chainmail is.

it's probably just a reference to their scales. which is kinda dumb bc there are types of armor other than chain mail which look far more like fish scales. i guess they were focusing more on making it sound cool rather than going for accuracy.
