mentors should really be teaching very basic mechanics like cop reports, counter-claiming, vest-testing, PoE, etc...

higher level play becomes more subjective. the motivated players will learn this on their own. you can't help someone that refuses to help themselves.

so no, you don't need to be a "good player" to be a mentor.

and frankly since mentors are site representatives, I believe many people could rightfully argue that a friendly/welcoming personality is even more important than being a good player.
