calvin, i bet if you really brainstorm some ideas and stuff to imrpove what they're doing, or make a really sick contribution in some way (not money), maybe they'll notice you more

Yeah, this is absolutely right and i'm freaking out because i have less than a year to build a finance network specifically for this reason
that and being able to micromanage which accounts systemoverload decided to bring into games lobby. the account where he tried to be rina really pissed me off

i already have an in, the guy my boss reps is about to drop a song with like lorde or something in the next few months. it's just that you have to like legitimately earn these people's trust/respect for them to think that you're a viable candidate to be included in like the actual decision making process/give you the push for you to start repping your own talent
finance might be a better starting point since you'll always be able to say you worked somewhere prestigious and can then go to another industry more easily. It'd be tough to get into finance if you start in music though imo
if you're good at something, enjoy it, and work super hard, you'll be able to make it in the field of your choice. Music is a crap field for pay and not run very well, but the people who do it are super into it.
You need to decide your purpose in work and figure out what makes the most sense for you to pursue.
this will be a thing once weed is legal and they have a yelp for weed reviews site.

i'm torn between what i want to do and what i should do, i also barely have a network in the field i'm being told to enter as opposed to having a semi solid network in the one i want to enter.
building a network is the best thing you can do early on - it will help you forever. I know anyone in my company would have my back on a reference check or anything like that if I left.
do you have an idea of where you want to start, career-wise at least?

i'm actually really scared to move into the real world... i don't know where to start
it's not bad. It can be interesting, but it's really all contingent on the organization you work for and if they treat HR like a real function or a 'support' function. It's critical.
