deletedover 8 years

This riddle became so popular in my country later so I'm gonna tell u it and let u try to solve it xD Here we go

A money thief had a fake 100 $ he went to a shop and bought from it's owner a newsletter that costs 10$ as he gave the fake 100$ to the shop owner the shop owner didn't have 90$ he had only solid money so he went to a cafe and gave it's owner the fake 100$ solid and took ten 10$(which means 10 x 10 = 100 x3 ) then the shop owner gave the thief the rest of his money which are 90 $ then after a while the cafe owner came to shop owner and told that 100$ he gave to him is fake so the shop owner gave him another 100$

How much did the shop owner lose?

(I shall answer it after a while xD) if you are confused write in the comments and I will answer (i'm not that good at writing in meaning xD)

just to reiterate, the thief is never giving you any real money. its his fake $100 BILL (like one bill unless im reading something wrong)

because it doesnt make sense for the thief to be paying you in 10 $10's when the item is only $10

the only thing that literally makes no sense is

"(which means 10 x 10 = 100 x3 )" i don't even know where this x3 is coming from LOL

Broken down

+100 (exchanged bills with 2nd shop)
-90 (change given to buyer)

10 cash leftover (sitting in a cash register)

-100 (reimbursed to the second shop owner)

Total loss:
$ -90
a newsletter (no cost given)

denial says

what do you mean arcbell?

the thief went to go buy something for $10, but he used his fake $100 so he would get change back

the shop owner didn't have change to break the 100 so he took that 100$ bill and went to some other shop and exchanged that 100 for 10 10$. the shop owner is reimbursing the cafe owner at this point because he was the one that initiated a trade, so its on him really (i mean the shop owner couldve argued the cafe owner was lying though)

when the shop owner returns with the 10 real 10$, he gives the thief $90 back because the thief paid 100 originally

so he loses 100$ to the cafe shop (because the cafe shop just broke the $100 bill for him) and he has to pay him back in full

he loses another $90 to the thief, because he has to pay the thief back in the change from the 100 the thief paid with

then he loses whatever you say the newsletter is worth, so lets say its actually worth 10 even though its obviously not

i'd say you lose 190 or 200

When he goes to exchange the 100 dollar bill for 10 ten dollar bills, you're forgetting that it is the thieves money he is exchanging, not his own. So deduct 100 dollars from your total amount of money lost.

Since this is a riddle, I'd assume the 10 dollars from the newspaper is included in the total amount of money lost, because if it wasn't, the riddle would be slightly easier to solve.

It's 90 + a newspaper, a newspaper is not the same as $10.

OH I thought the THIEF was the one who went to the cafe to get change, not the shop owner
over 8 years
I mean, the shop owner lost $90+a newspaper if what I think is happening is happening. The cafe owner should've at least given the shop owner the fake bill tho lmao.

Braixen is correct, the shop owner lost 100 dollars.

He is given a fake 100 dollars, and has no change for it so he goes to the cafe to receive a real 100 dollars. He hands 90 dollars to the thief and keeps 10.

At this point, he is at a 10 dollar profit.

The cafe owner demands 100 dollars back. He gives it back to him.

He is now at a 90 dollar deficit.

He loses the newsletter to the thief which is worth 10 dollars.

90 + 10 = 100

The cafe owner accepted the fake bill so it's on him. Or should be. The shop owner technically didn't accept it.

but the shop owner didnt have 90 in change... and the theif got 10 10s

the thief payed 100 dollars for a 10 dollar newspaper, 90 was his change.

the shop owner is reimbursing the cafe owner because a) the cafe owner also has nothing to do with the fake interaction and shouldn't lose 100 dollars over it and b) it contributes to the riddle

Also why is the shop owner reimbursing the cafe owner when the fake transaction had nothing to do with him. That's not realistic at all.

"then the shop owner gave the thief the rest of his money which are 90 $" I don't get it I thought the thief wanted the newspaper why would the shop owner give the thief money, isn't the thief giving the shop owner $10?

Braixen says

The shop owner lost $100

He receives $100 fake money, and trades it in for real money.
Out of the newfound money, he loses:
$90 because he gave change.

However, he keeps $10 from the cafe owner because that's the price of the newsletter.

Now, the shop owner has to give the cafe owner $100 because the original bill was fake, and since he kept $10 real dollars from the cafe owner, he gives that back, plus a $90 more.

In the end, he gave the cafe owner $90 of his own money.
Money lost so far: $90.

Since the shop owner doesn't make any profit from the sale, he loses another $10 because a newsletter is $10.
Money lost in the end: $90 + $10 = $100

remember the money he got from the cafe is not fake it's real :)
