But should we really pay for people who are pursuing a degree that is irrelevant to their job prospects, i.e. getting a history degree if you don't plan on being a history teacher? It's great if people want to pay the extra money for college in order to do something that they enjoy like art, music, history, psychology, etc, but should the government really be expected to pay for someone's luxury that won't directly translate to a job?

Of course, the real issue is much deeper than this, stemming from the saturation of college degrees and subsequently jobs that require simply "any bachelor's degree". Why anyone should have to pay money for something that won't actually make them better at a job is beyond me, especially when they could be spending that time getting relevant experience.

Rutab every argument you just made is wrongheaded and ignorant and perpetuated only by demagogues, and you should turn off the television and open an economics book before you decide to play economist on the internet.
deletedalmost 9 years
1. I already refuted that point. Any economist will tell you that higher wages are good for business, not bad for business. The only people arguing otherwise are ignorant about economics.

2. That's not how inflation works, and you don't understand inflation. Even if that were true though (it isn't), inflation is actually good for anyone who has student loan debt, because that means the debt is worth less. I welcome inflation :)

Okay, I really need to go to bed now. I've already pushed my time tonight as it is lol. I have classes in the morning.

I'll be back tomorrow if you're still around.

Here's what happens when corporations are forced to pay all of their employees (some really incompetent, whiny teenagers):

1.) Said corporation cannot afford to hire as many works - in my state, minimum wage is $8.10. So you're just about paying one person for 2 employees worth of pay.

When companies can't afford to pay all their employees, some of them get fired. Then, the company looks for other ways to cut as many workers as you can.

When the employees get fired, it is almost impossible to get hired anywhere else, because what is everywhere else doing? The same thing! Companies will continue to look for ways to reduce the workers in order to save any amount of profit.

2.) When stupid jobs like working at McDonald's get $15/hour, yes, inflation kicks in. Your Startbucks coffee will cost $8, your milk will cost $10, etc.

Why you think the size of a country would affect the success of Nordic Model Capitalism completely eludes me.

Also stop comparing the America to Denmark/Sweeden/Switzerland, etc. They're so small compared to the United States. The policies would never transfer over well

which is why defederalization is a good idea.

I do support the 15 dollar an hour minimum wage. And in case you somehow think I haven't already won this same argument a million times already, I'll rebuke your points before you even make them.

1. The minimum wage was worth more when it was implemented than it is worth today, when you factor in inflation.

2. You should understand what Real Wages are before you try to argue about economics, please.

3. And this is the one that really eludes people who argue about how the 15 dollar an hour minimum wage would hurt small businesses. Newsflash! What is the best way to bolster the economy, historically? CONSUMPTION. And what do minimum skilled workers do with the excess money they make? THEY CONSUME. There is nothing better for small businesses than a higher minimum wage. If a business can't afford to stay in business with a higher minimum wage and increased consumption, they deserve to go under. That's capitalism, champ.

and this btw is why defederalization is a good idea.

Rutab are you aware that Bernie Sanders is not a socialist as he claims, but technically a Nordic Model Capitalist? His platform is a carbon copy of historical Nordic Model Capitalism, which already functions better than our system in a large section of the world. You can quantify the success of Nordic Model Capitalism in a variety of ways, such as how every country that has implemented Nordic Model Capitalism is rated higher than the US in happiness, or how the average citizen in a Nordic Model Capitalist society makes more money than the average US citizen.

The hard thing to argue against, champ, is that Bernie's platform already works.

Not likely to work within the American system, so against.

You do know that America used to have public health care until Nixon privatized it to help the rich get richer, right?

This is a good read regarding the education plan, as it considers some interesting points about all of the very important variables that we can't predict.

I assume you support the $15/hour minimum wage, yes/
