A little idea.

So basically, one huge issue this site has is simplicity for newer players. Upon joining an unranked game, which new players are forced to do, you face a couple different situations, all basically bad. You either join a game with a -ton of random roles that is a clusterfuck and scares the player away. Or you might join a game with a bunch of veterans who do stuff without an explanation which just confuses the new player, and likely drives them away. Or you join an unranked game with a bunch of other noobs who have no clue what they're doing and screw it up. In all situations, new players seem to have a tough road ahead of them. It's only the players who are smart and patient enough to learn about the site that will actually end up staying.

So, my proposal is this: Have a beginner lobby, where players are automatically sent to upon joining the site. There they can join one of the couple allowed setups (simple ones) and join a game. Simultaneously, the game will also have a couple of slots for veterans. Essentially, veterans with over 100 games played, may join the beginner lobby and join games. They can join the game, help the new players understand it, and so on. What do the veterans gain from it? Every 25 beginner games a veteran helps out in, they get 1 token (something along those lines)

This whole system encourages veterans to help out, helps new players understand the site, and I think it'd work. I want harsh critique. kThxBye

This could all be fixed if the players adjusted their attitudes toward new players.

@Ashelia well I didn't see that... I just logged on one day and saw a poll asking about a merge.

there were accounts in competitive games that never played janitorial 2.0 before. it's fair to react the way shamzy is saying. it's competitive after all. it isn't the responsibility of comp players to host casual red hearts to teach players how to play imo

Scenario 1: Lobbies split up and games take too long to fill, a severe lack of new player influx

Scenario 2: Lobbies stay the way they are, everyone tries to be a little more helpful towards the players who enjoy the game and may in a year's time be the new generation of trophy winners

Except they did fill... not as fast as in main lobby of course but it still filled.

yeah i too enjoy waiting 30 minutes for games to fill in my Secret No Noobs Allowed lobby

Please stop exaggerating. For me it filled usually during the afternoon around 4pm and was at its best during the evening around 6-7. This is because I'm like 5 hours ahead of people in the US so thats when games generally used to fill. Around those times it took maximum 10 minutes for a game to fill. Stop shi*ting on this idea when it worked for a long time.

it didn't work and you're plugging your ears and ignoring all logical discourse if you think games didn't have problems filling and that the lobby was only months away from inactivity death.

@Vitacon They can ASK a mentor. Can you read? Seriously stop making it seem like I'm contradicting myself when you're just quoting what you want to.

"If they want help they can ask for it, I'm not about to go out of my way to help the new players improve at a game I'm probably better at if I don't absolutely have to"

I suggest you take a step back, put on your reading glasses, and read what you're posting here champ.

We have mentors. I don't need to teach them anything. If they want help they can ask for it. Most of them consider themselves to be "pro" anyway and become angry when I give them tips on how to play. They're basic tips too, not ones that would completely change how they play. Anyway I really don't care too much about their development. I'm not a mentor and don't plan on being one. Whilst I agree that new players playing against new players might not at first improve their play dramatically, it will make them ENJOY their games. They can then choose whether they want to become more serious or just continue playing normal mafia games with their friends.

Shamzy, when's the last time a new player almost singlehandedly lost you a game of competitive mafia?

You're not arguing from a position of power here when the one game I've played with you you ended up power-tunneling the townies for the majority of the game.

I play mafia for enjoyment and competition, as most competitive players do. At some point during your stay at epicmafia.com you come to realize that there is no fun in competitive games and so no enjoyment. The enjoyment comes from winning a trophy. Red hearts however, along with unranked, are fun to play with friends and what not. But when it comes to competitive, like me, most players will just try to win rather than actually enjoying themselves.

Like I said, some people take competitive much more serious than others. By bringing the old way back, we can avoid more reports about harassment and gamethrowing. New players might actually enjoy this site.

Are you saying this because you are one of the people that are incredibly rude to new players?

Yes. Though not all the time. If my partner is a new player I'll try to explain to them first but quickly, and if they cant grasp it I get annoyed and start raging. This is usually why I get dodged.

Then you're an idiot. You can't blame a new player for being new. If you really want to make an impact on the site, instead of making big blog-posts on the forums about how the site sucks you could always host red heart setups to adjust newer players to how mafia actually works.

This is actually a good idea, I've tried to get friends to play before, we try sandbox so I'm not ruining games in training lobby, I guess main lobby now, and they're confused as hell and have no idea what's going on and quickly lose interest in ever playing on the site.

There would be no real problem trying to fill games with the same people who would play with you in #MyPremiumLobby in Main. If you're just playing mafia to for enjoyment you're better off playing with new players in Main; they'll eventually grow and become better anyway.

There's no real argument you can make to back you up as to why a lobby-split is a good idea at this point.

Who the heck has time to schedule their real life around what time people are going to be in a lobby for their games?

Well I went to school so I was usually home around 6-7 ... it just happened. I didn't wait for like 5 hours just to play.

Don't forget a lot of veterans are actually rude as heeeeck and ridicule the newer players for being noobs. Yeah, I'm really gonna want to stay and play a game with a bunch of complacent snobs who don't care about anyone other than themselves and their inflated egos.

it's shocking that people still feel like this

way to completely dodge the fact that competitive games do not fill when put in a separate lobby
