Bad dubs don't persuade new fans. With new fans especially those who are hesitant of anime, you have to begin with dubbed anime. It's always good to start with widely acclaimed anime that has a strong dub such as cowboy bebop.
However, the interests of the person you're showing anime to really is something that can also help with recommendations. If nashi said what genre he's interested in like mechs then I could show him maybe the Gurren Lagann dub and see if he likes it.
lol @ all you people recommending subbed anime to a beginner, geez. The ones that said Death Note, Cowboy Bebop and such are the preferable recommendations.
It's a series of the action/fantasy genre that's 26 episodes in length. IMO 7-8/10 for the endless rollercoaster of plots and cliffhangers and a less than satisfying ending
Death Note is most definitely the best place to start anime with. Would also recommend a bunch of other animes (AoT, SAO, Madoka Magika, FMA:B, Code Geass)
Honestly for a beginner to anime, I'd say Cowboy Bebop is the best way to start since it doesn't have too many annoying anime tropes and he/she can watch it dubbed if they aren't yet comfortable with watching subbed yet.
If you enjoyed Bebop if you do see this, i'd say go to Samurai Champloo next since it's made by the same director and the english dub is also good.
