How to write a good college essay?

deletedabout 10 years

Hey EM, I'm going to be applying to colleges soon, and because my GPA sucks (3.28) I have to do phenomenal on the SAT and write a fantastic college essay if Im going to apply and actually be considered. While I've already taken the SAT, I still need help writing the personal statements and essays. Do you have suggestions? How personal should it be? Thanks for your imput!

(The schools I'm applying to UC Santa Cruz, Riverside, and Merced, UW Seattle, UoArizona, UNLV, and UL - Chicago)

Why are you making fun of him when you're the one who decided to choose philosophy for a major?

Just to be clear, I am making fun of you, not the community college you attended. I'm just using that as a rhetorical conduit

Your community college prepared you for a world in which not having to write a two-page personal statement is literally "a perk" that high school students ought to take into account when deciding which institutions of higher education they ought to apply to

It might depend on the community college. Peta might live in the middle of nowhere where there are crap options. My community college has one of the best broadcasting programs in the country so it worked out well for me.

If it's not about having easier essays then why did you make a post in this thread

If you can afford a four-year college and decide to go to a community college instead then you are an idiot. If you can't afford a four-year college then you should apply for financial aid. The OP is evidently not applying for a community college and that fact alone indicates an overwhelming likelihood that it isn't useful career-wise for him/her to do so.

Peta assumes that all people both qualify for financial aid and can afford the outrageous loans they destroy students with.

Community college is an incredibly viable option and my community college at least was a great experience (better than my University, even.) - Saves an assload of money and you still learn.

It's not about having easier essays you

Never mind, he is applying for community colleges alongside UC and UW Seattle, which makes no sense to me but whatever. There's no reason for Riddler to look at UW Seattle and then look at Merced and go, "Nah, just apply to Merced because that way you don't have to put effort into an essay." Either you can afford to go to a four-year college or you can't. His reasoning should start and stop right there.
