Lucid: Mobile Lobby

about 10 years

This is brilliant! Can't wait for mobile in-game to compliment this. Seems pretty stable, here's a few cosmetic suggestions:

(I'm using BB Q10, default browser)

  • Might be a good idea to move the big red "Sign up to play!" button closer to the top, and scrap the thin little Welcome / Login / Sign Up nav, and instead just have another big red "Login" button beside the sign up. The nav bar looks kinda squished (at least on my browser)

  • Not sure if this is just my phone, but the advirtisment at the top is just slightly cut off on the left side with a narrow blank space on the right side.

  • The "Competitive Setups" section has a red heart beside it instead of a gold heart, which may lead to some confusion.

And here's a couple other ideas regarding the actual mobile lobby function:

  • I think the "pinned setups" tab on the mobile lobby is a lot more intuitive and easy to work with than the current "Find Setup" and "Create Setup" if a user is looking to start their own game on a mobile device. You might wanna just have a "Create Game" button that brings you to the pinned setups, and instead have the classic find setup and create setup navigate available from there if the user wants something special.

  • Something to think about if you're going to be investing a lot in the mobile lobby / game is a "quick join" button that the user can configure... here's a sketch of how that might work:

Automatically join closest to full setup in the lobby as long as it passes the user's filters (default to listed featured, favorited, and competitive setups, red or gold heart). If none matching available, create a random setup from the user's filter list, preferring comp setups that are also on the user's favorites list, etc. Default would be red heart if the user hasn't joined the round competition, or gold if they have. Simple filter configuration could just be checkboxes for comp, featured, and favorited setups, with an advanced option where the user can just add setups in a priority list.

in one game, you can completely own maxwell who is the "best" and in the next game you can get completely owned by a training lobby player just of a lucky guess.

The thing is, the level of play on the site is limited by the size of it's player base at the moment... people don't have enough people to compete seriously against to want to take things seriously, so no one feels justified in trying to be the best (except pranay) because no one values being the best because there aren't enough people trying at it.

a. people who play on mobile will not strive to be the best. b. nobody strives to be the best because mafia is inherently a flawed game in that regard.

I doubt more people will play on mobile devices if the site isn't up to par, and if it is then it won't be that big of a deal anyway.

Exactly

"people don't have enough people to compete seriously against to want to take things seriously"

It took me about 3 times to read this without getting confused.

would it be possible to make it so that you can only join gold hearts on non-mobile but if youre already in teh game you can go on mobile. would that make sense?????

I'm sure it's possible but I don't think it's a good idea. If people want to play competitive on mobile it's at their peril if they can't do as good a job, just like if you wanna play competitive when you're sleepy. We want more people getting into the game and excited about it, at any cost, even if it means people type more concisely and don't spam as much.

The entire site-meta will be killed, no one will be banned and the quality of games will be permanent regressed as a new norm is crafted.

Games get more competitive as more players play them together. The most competitive online games with the highest level play in the world are also the most popular.

but the most competitive tf2 games arent the ones where people play with trackpads

That's because the games you play with trackpads aren't as popular, or don't have enough depth to have a serious competitive level (a problem mafia is completely free of regardless of what medium it's played in)

thats not what im saying. people who play tf2 on a trackpad are not the competitive users who will increase the level of play. they are just casual players, which is fine. likewise, people who will play on a phone will also be casual players, which is also fine but it will not increase skill level. additionally, since theyre playing casually they should be fine w/ just red hearts, imo.

People's ability to play mafia on mobile is compromised because it is very hard to play on one's phone. If it's going to be more mobile-friendly, that means that the mobile people can more easily play more similarly to how they play on their computers.

It could potentially increase the number of people playing on their phones, I suppose, but so what? If it does it's because it's easier to play, which means there is less of a problem. If it doesn't become much easier to play, the number of people using phones will likely not change much.

this is true but playing teh end of a game on mobile is different than playing all your hearts on mobile

it is literally impossible to play on mobile at the same level because you type two times slower

for games in mobile to succeed you need a way to interact with the game without losing any of the information streaming from the chat

I've finished quite a couple of games on my phone when my internet goes down with no problem

yeah, me too

Um restricting ranked games to no mobile will increase the number of vegs.

I've finished quite a couple of games on my phone when my internet goes down with no problem, and I imagine there must be some others who use their phones to finish games that they can't use their computer anymore

If gold hearts are blocked that'll probably be fine.

Yeah no worries, I'll create ways to restrict certain ranked games to no mobile.
