Lucid: Mobile Lobby

about 10 years

This is brilliant! Can't wait for mobile in-game to compliment this. Seems pretty stable, here's a few cosmetic suggestions:

(I'm using BB Q10, default browser)

  • Might be a good idea to move the big red "Sign up to play!" button closer to the top, and scrap the thin little Welcome / Login / Sign Up nav, and instead just have another big red "Login" button beside the sign up. The nav bar looks kinda squished (at least on my browser)

  • Not sure if this is just my phone, but the advirtisment at the top is just slightly cut off on the left side with a narrow blank space on the right side.

  • The "Competitive Setups" section has a red heart beside it instead of a gold heart, which may lead to some confusion.

And here's a couple other ideas regarding the actual mobile lobby function:

  • I think the "pinned setups" tab on the mobile lobby is a lot more intuitive and easy to work with than the current "Find Setup" and "Create Setup" if a user is looking to start their own game on a mobile device. You might wanna just have a "Create Game" button that brings you to the pinned setups, and instead have the classic find setup and create setup navigate available from there if the user wants something special.

  • Something to think about if you're going to be investing a lot in the mobile lobby / game is a "quick join" button that the user can configure... here's a sketch of how that might work:

Automatically join closest to full setup in the lobby as long as it passes the user's filters (default to listed featured, favorited, and competitive setups, red or gold heart). If none matching available, create a random setup from the user's filter list, preferring comp setups that are also on the user's favorites list, etc. Default would be red heart if the user hasn't joined the round competition, or gold if they have. Simple filter configuration could just be checkboxes for comp, featured, and favorited setups, with an advanced option where the user can just add setups in a priority list.

I've used the desktop version on an iphone5 for ages and I've been fine in games and the forums. A long time ago I did it with a BB torch and it sucked. The mobile version still glitches because you are unable to scroll on iphone5 anyway.

I think blackberry needs the most work for mobile optimization (or they could just be crappy phones for this kind of thing idk, they certainly were when I had one)

Seemed to work fine on my Galaxy S5, but when I went to comment on someone's wall the "Post comment" box to click to send the comment only appeared if I put in a load of spaces at the end of my message.

i have a galaxy s3, and im having a lot of issues with scrolling too. when i go to the forums, i can only see the first 6 threads of every page. if i switch to landscape i can scroll, but only through those first 6 threads. http://imgur.com/AC6Sgjz

scrolling through comments doesnt really work either. i thought it was working for a sec but now it doesnt seem to be? like i can go to the thread, and depending on the length of the OP and how many comments (basically, if i can see page numbers without having to scroll), i can switch through the comments pages but i still cant scroll.

also i while i was playing with it, i was in sandbox so i went to the learn tab, and the formatting is screwy there, but that's not really a big deal. http://imgur.com/9v4QtUv

Is it just me, or does the mobile version not scroll?

Yes but "there are a lot more bad players" is not going to motivate people. "There are a lot more players to compete with" is, and your premise was that the mobile players would /not/ compete (first of all, I don't think that's true, second of all I'm pretty sure there won't be any strictly mobile players anyway).

Adding mobile will increase site traffic which in the long run will increase competition: that is what you should be saying but not what you actually are saying

Games are inherently meaningless, making artificial meaning a key ingredient in motivating someone to 'go pro'
about 10 years
There's 2 ways a pro can be added to the pool of players:

1. A player is added, and they happen to be a pro.

2. A player is added, and they eventually become a pro through continued interest and natural ability.

Rather, come to think of it, there's only one way a pro is added to the pool of players (option 2), and that's a process that happens more if the person feels like the competition has more meaning, which happens more when there are more people to surpass.

No dude listen.

The higher the number of people, the higher the competition, because statistically speaking the more people in a competition the more likely you are going to find someone that is good at it.

However, that's when it's random. Adding 50 beginners to a chess world championship won't make it more competitive. The competition will be between the pros.

The more known a game is, the more likely pros are going to appear, and the more competitive it will be because people want to be the best at games that people will recognize (your top 10% thing etc) but adding people to /lose/ doesn't make things more competitive, only adding people that can challenge or POTENTIALLY challenge with practice etc

Idk why we are even debating this tbh

You're implying to make things competitive we just need to add a bunch of people who suck. Imagine if that were the case in chess competitions or something. Numbers increase competitiveness, but "people to beat" doesn't.

It is the case in chess competitions. Chess has been an extremely popular game worldwide for a very long time. Pros can't exist without amateurs... people only try to master a game to be in the top 10, 1, or 0.1% etc, they don't try to be the best at a game 300 people take seriously in the world.

It is because people who can try harder will be motivated to try harder because there are more people to be better than... I know it seems strange but that's how it works.

YeezusWest, you've got it backwards, the people who play causally (on mobile) aren't the people who are gonna play competitively, they're the people the competitive players are gonna be better than.

that isnt an increase in the skill level of the site
