It's great to see Hockey back, but will the shortened season have any large impact on any of the teams or players? So far, nothing huge has really been presented, and everybody looks as though they haven't missed a beat.

If I had to pick a team to win this season (it's much too early for me to decide now), I'd go with the San Jose Sharks. They have a well-balanced team this year and so far are doing excellent. If I had to pick someone from the East, I'd go with the New Jersey Devils. They've had great chemistry so far already and have a great penalty kill and power play, and they always have Brodeur to back them up when they begin to falter.

One rookie that I think is really hot so far this season is Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues. With 4 goals and 6 points in 4 games played, he's super hot and has been leading the Blues throughout their season so far. Very quick and dangerous; I see him being a trouble for most defensemen.

The season is still very young, and there's a long way left to go. Who will hoist the cup? Only time can tell...

How did you find out about EM?

"Well, a couple of friends from an old website I used to browse were members for a few months and during a particularly boring afternoon last May, I decided to finally give in and join to see what all of the fuss was about. Nearly a year later, I am the only person out of that group who still uses epicmafia now. D:"

What's your favorite role?

"This question is almost impossible, but I think my favorite town role is probably oracle because I like that depending on how things turn out, it can grant the town a clear or aid them in revealing a mafia while still relying on a slight measure of chance. as far as maf-sided roles, sniper is the best and should be in every setup ever. Sniped and dangerous, anyone?"

Any last words to the community? :)

"Is it unfair to just say the community as a whole? There are literally so many members on this site who have made my time around here enjoyable and amazing in some way and honestly, there are even a few that I'd go so far as to consider some of my best friends. I look forward to signing on and seeing certain faces around, whether they're familiar because of the forums or because of games and I really love that about this place.

And, well, I think kittens are pretty cute."

Alcoways still not the tracker

This is a good setup for what it is attempting to accomplish, a setup that allows an interesting kind of mechanic of both town and mafia knowing what dies, but not openly knowing it. I love that there the possibility of having an unknown number of both blues and morts, and having no way of knowing what the number is until the end game. But, this setup is complicated, revolving around confusing mechanics and mostly pure scumhunting. I like this setup and it is played frequently and successfully with more experienced players, but with a crowd of newer players coming into competitive this round, this isn't being played much.

Lynch or be lynched (LOBL)

A classic setup that revolves heavily around what prs, if any, are alive. I love this setup from the simplistic style of it, but the massive amount of possible strategies them stem from it. The day one start is hectic for mafia because nilla has to decide if he is going to claim a pr at all, while the guiser/hooker knows. This is the basic example of utilizing the multisetup capabilities and gives an easy way and a more difficult way for each side to go about it: claiming, fake claiming, or false claiming. All have their upsides and downsides, giving this setup one of the setups that the players have the most control in. I love this setup, but this setup along with the other multisetup picked by turq are going to be extremely underplayed because most of the other setups have easier play styles as well as higher point yields.

Classic Mafia

What much is to say about a setup as classic as Classic Mafia? It's the basic setup played that is synonymous with Training Lobby that is built around the fact that 99% of the time there will either be a clear or a cross. The quick sense of the games (each game can take as little as 10 minutes) makes it feel to some like a point farm, but it is the quintessential setup to get people into competitive play. Some oppose it being played in Competitive Lobby as it brings the generally worse players that usually play to train in the Training Lobby, but I personally feel that everyone needs to learn.

Sex and Lies

This is probably my second favorite setup on the website that I haven't made. Having a setup with such mechanics as Disguiser, Mason, and No Reveal that actually works is amazing. The in-depth strategies that come from this, but also mixed with the scumhunting that needs to take place is fantastic. My personal favorite strategy is getting mismasoned as disguiser and then guising out, leaving it at D2 lylo. Unfortunately, as this has some difficult abilities to understand, and with the influx of inexperienced Training Lobby players to play Class, this setup is being played by people that don't understand what they are doing, leading to very easy mafia or town deaths. If this setup is played correctly, it is a lot of fun and allows for long but amazing games. If played incorrectly, it is frustrating and annoying.

Basic Scumhunt

I feel that this is too closely resembles Classic Mafia to be in the same round. Not just the fact that it is a 7-man setup that goes into a D1 mylo, but the fact that it revolves widely around players ccing or otherwise having a clear. The only additions to this that really alter gameplay is the Framer and the Miller, which makes this much more mafiasided. It's as if the addition of this was to attempt to make Classic Mafia more based towards scumhunting, which doesn't really accomplish what it was trying to do. For instance, cop is basically useless, getting innocent reports is about all that is good, and the drunk isn't good until there is one mafia left. So, assuming neither of the PRs die N1, which has a fairly good probability, and you lynch mafia correctly D1 (and you don't NL to give them another shot at a PR), and then that is when drunk is useful. Drunking while you have two mafia alive is risky as you could accidently drunk the cop. I don't oppose this setup, it is just really mafiasided and the only reason it is played is because of the major town point payout.

Basic Variant

Another very scumhunting based setup in this round is fantastic, but as I stated in my Sex and Lies review, the amount of players that don't quite understand what they are doing somewhat ruins it. For instance, I had a player claim cop D1 when doctor was dead with an inno report that he didn't out. The setup itself is fairly simple, based mostly around scumhunting coupled with the cop reports to see if someone is clear based on what dies and who is lynched. It's a very good setup to learn how to scumhunt, as you usually have either a clear or a cc battle to keep someone on the lynch list, while others learn how to generally scumhunt between the rest of them. Another great setup in a great round.

All in all, this is a fantastic round. The great classic setups like S+L, BV, LOBL, and BSH, along with CM, keeps this round active and fun. The rounds that are the best to run in are there ones where you can join basically any game open and have a good game based on scumhunting and skill rather than luck. I personally would've run on this round if I had not have had real life issues. Good luck to all runners! You chose a great time to run.

Dear Tri, I've been recently trying to transition into competitive and I've been having some trouble with not "AtEing". What is that and how can I stop? From, Anon

Well Anon, AtEing, or Appealing to Emotion, is a tricky technique that when used in small amounts can be somewhat effective, but when overly used can be commonly read as scummy. Using AtE is a common ability that training players use without being stopped, but in a more competitive region it is harder to get away with it. AtE in its most simple form is any form of enticing other players to vote with something else that is not derived from in game. The spectrum goes widely, going as lightly as using the word 'please' and as far as using OGI. The most common form of AtE people use is the calling of other people 'stupid' or 'dumb'. This manipulation of people's emotions can be used to make yourself appear town, but when used in the correct way.

Then, what's bad about it? Well, let me give you an example: you are being lynched and there's roughly two minutes left in a final 3. Two votes are on you. You can either try to logically and rapidly prove your point or at least get someone to take their vote off, which will get you some time to talk, or you can say such phrases as "If you do this, you lose" or "You guys are dumb". In a situation like this, you are enticing the people voting you into the conclusion that you are either a) squirming at the thought of losing b) mafia or c) all of the above.

AtE is easily avoidable by using logic and not letting others stupidity/genius getting in the way. If you really are struggling with it, think this: Is everything I'm saying really having to do with the game at hand? If not, you might want to take a step back and look at what you are saying.
