Well, actually I believe a shmoo is a cartoon character. Biologists named the prefusion yeast cell a shmoo because it resembles the appearance of the cartoon. (ok im done)

I saw your name, and I got really excited because I thought you were a biology nerd. But after viewing your profile, you seem unaware that "shmoo" refers to the elongated yeast cell state that occurs before fusion.
