it's a good thing i listened to this just recently. sufjan is a master of painting soundscapes about various locales, whether it be sweeping pastorals or introspective anecdotes about urban discomfort and restlessness. of all the "state" themed records, i'd say that this is his best. listening to "illinois" was a time traveling experience, chock-full of quirky anachronisms and vivid narratives about midwestern idiosyncrasy. i particularly love the preponderance of the baroque element on this album. having never personally traveled to the midwest, "illinois" certainly filled that void.
