i was having a discussion w my friends and they were arguing that being kind makes you a good person. i personally disagree with this because i feel like people are kind in part because they want to feel good about themselves, not because they're good people. i was just wondering what other people thought about this bc i feel like i have kind of an unpopular opinion on the matter.
have you ever been completely selfless in your reasoning for doing something?
im not really trying to debate anything tbh i just wanted to see what other people thought about the matter because i havent completely formed an opinion about it myself

morality comes down to a matter of perspective, although perspectives often overlap in specific matters. this is too generalized and pedantic for there to be a single right answer, especially since the notion of a "good person" is oversimplified, as bebop mentioned earlier
Your debate here, then, shouldn't be whether being kind makes you a good person or not, but rather coming up with what the characteristics of a "good" person are.
it's such a subjective term that it's really difficult to call people good because nobody can know that person well enough to make the decision. i'm sure there are some people who are absolute paragons of virtue who've never said a bad word and live a righteous life but does that make them a good person?
Technically that means she isn't kind, because kindness in a genuine form implies a sort of good will towards others, it just makes her incredibly fake.
Plenty of kind people exist who are still boring or bad friends, people who take all sides, can't keep secrets, shady, you can be very nice and still be an awful person to invest your trust in. Therefore being kind isn't enough to justify being good or bad. If you're only kind for show then you have a bit of a bad side but who's to say that's the entire person? Side note, speaking of kind people who may do bad things, Sinead lying is bad
Genuwine compassion and care for others makes you a good person. You can not always be kind, there are varying circumstances..sometimes you must be hard on a person.
Agruing is only good for making a person see a different angle of their cirumstance.
