i was having a discussion w my friends and they were arguing that being kind makes you a good person. i personally disagree with this because i feel like people are kind in part because they want to feel good about themselves, not because they're good people. i was just wondering what other people thought about this bc i feel like i have kind of an unpopular opinion on the matter.
have you ever been completely selfless in your reasoning for doing something?
if someone acts spitefully and does "bad" things intentionally and makes no attempt to be good at any point in their lives then they're bad in my book though
It's also strange that in the 90 minutes since the birth of this thread 3 people convinced themselves they've (repeatedly?) done something purely from the good of their hearts.

they don't but i'm being silly because if it doesn't matter to me and it's not important and my view is uninformed and imprecise there's no reason for me to keep at this
I don't know why I'm even posting in this thread since I feel worse for it and I don't think I'm contributing anything, nor do I think it's an important discussion, so I guess it's procrastination
Glad to see jess sheeped gerry
lol why do things have to be important for you to discuss them that's stupid

Humans are multifaceted. The same individual who chooses to be kind to one can also choose to be unkind to another.
The person they are kind to will view them as a kind individual, loyal friend, warm, affectionate, comfortable.
The person they are unkind to will view them as an unkind individual, b*tch, scum of the earth, disgusting human being.
Instead of trying to conform people to a single characteristic it's better to just treat people the way you want to be treated. If they continue to be an a*sshole to you then they're not worth your time.
It's really that simple.
i dont think its reasonable to ask people to be kind to everyone, especially when their kindness isn't genuine

Morality itself is an abstraction and not defined in concrete terms, thus a matter of perspective. People can be both bad and good. Not that there aren't people who do really great things or really bad things and deserve to be recognized as such. I just think one should keep in mind that it's not as simple as that.

i mean i get the motivation for asking the question and have asked it myself in the past but at this point in time i just don't think it gets anywhere. I think your friends are wrong but I also think it's better to encourage people to be kind and impossible to truly know people's motivations. I mean, I don't know about you, but I don't even know my own motivation half the time. Is it any better to do it because you don't like to see people suffering than because you want to "be a good person"? I think it just depends on the situation and I don't think it's something you can really generalize. Or at least, I can't. But kindness and self-sacrifice should be encouraged, and unfortunately, we can't really peer into others' minds.
