Holocaust Denial and Free Speech

about 8 years

Greetings Epicmafia community,

I've been wanting to make this thread for a while but haven't until now because I believed it to be a tad too risque.

Many countries have laws prohibiting the denial of the Holocaust (the genocide of Jews, Poles and other Slavic peoples, Soviet POWs, Romanis, communists, homosexuals, Freemasons, Jehovah's Witnesses and the mentally and physically disabled by Germany). Many countries have even broader laws which ban genocide denial in general.

In Germany for example, 'Volksverhetzung' is a concept in German criminal law that bans Holocaust denial. In addition, 'Strafgesetzbuch' outlaws various symbols of "unconstitutional organisations" such as the Swastika and the SS runes. Offenders who break these laws shall be liable to imprisonment from anywhere between three months and five years.

I'm not here to take either side in the debate, I would simply like to hear Sandbox's opinions on the matter.

Is this an ethical thing to do? Should people be able to be persecuted by law for simply holding beliefs?

First off, concentration camps (later forced labor camps) were opened before 1939, did the creator of this photo just think about Auschwitz as the first camp or? The first camp was Dachau in 1933. They started practicing the method of forced labor in 1934.

Secondly, the 11 million people killed were not solely killed in death camps, the war included a ton more people than that and many were targeted on the streets by both guards and citizens alike. Only about half of the Jewish people killed were killed in death camps.

Also, Auschwitz population was much larger than 418=3%. 3% of their population would've been about 3,900. This doesn't help my point but jesus christ the picture just has so many problems in general.
I'm also sure this is bait but I really have nothing better to do with my break between classes so.

And tbh, if you are that stupid to have this thought and not be antisemitic, your just stupid. like you can go visit Auschwitz, it's a physical place that still sits there, what do you think they were doing with all them Jews?

Racism is against the law right, it's only banned because holocaust denial is normally a thing that anti-Semites believe, this is due to lots of anti-semitic people thinking that the holocaust was made up by the Jews and is really just a lie they tell you to make you feel bad. That's why it's banned because it's generally anti-semitic.

I think it's important to define what "denying the Holocaust" means, exactly, which means you have to also define what the Holocaust was. For example, let's say that believing in the Holocaust means believing these three things happened: the murder of 6 million Jews, a definite order from Adolf Hitler to systematically exterminate all Jews, and that gas chambers using Zyklon B were one of the major methods used in this deliberate extermination. If you use this definition, then questioning or not believing any one of these things would count as denying the Holocaust - because, if you claim one part of the definition isn't true, then you are effectively claiming that the Holocaust as it is defined didn't happen.

Personally, I think there is a big difference between believing (or simply investigating that) a part of our accepted history is untrue or misrepresented, and denying every single aspect of an event in history. Making it illegal to question things, whatever they may be, doesn't sit well with me. I can understand why people would be upset by others denying such a sensitive part of history, but demanding silence and blind acceptance isn't the way to go. If those who question or deny are wrong, they'll be proven as such through open discussion. Silencing them - especially through government power - only gives weight to their words.

I have to ask, is this within the context of the American constitution?

the main point of the thread is here at the end where i say

"Is this an ethical thing to do? Should people be able to be persecuted by law for simply holding beliefs?"

do people believe that the state should be able to silence people for believing things (even if the beliefs are backwards and hurtful)?
