time isnt an illusion its a step measurement
if you play a video game, logic is controlled by steps (or frames). although steps leading up to the current no longer exist in the present, they led up to the current step and are responsible for the resulting logic. if a bullet is on a timer, the time is a measurement of steps between firing
time is just a measurement of every step in the universe, all of the infinitesimally small changes that occur as time progresses
time is also ingenuously represented by an infinite scale, meaning that although the time between two seconds is infinite, our measurement of time can regress infinitely such that it can be upscaled to represent something comprehensible

Time, as generally perceived to be linear, is an illusion. Only the now, the present exists and is both the eternal and the ephemeral.
The present is however, malleable. Space-time distortion is merely a lag in the present.
Example:

For weak gravitational fields, you can take R to be the distance that,lets say a clock, is away from the center of the massive body. For strong fields, it's better to think of R as the Schwarzschild coordinate, which is defined by the fact that a circle of constant radius R has a circumference of 2 pi R, and a sphere of radius R has a surface area of pi R^2.
Thus the fact that you have different clocks in different gravitational fields, revealing different measurements of time, are exactly that: discrepancies in measurement but not accurate measurements of time distortion.
Imagine pouring a glass of water into your hand and trying to hold on to that water. You can measure the amount, a cup, but you cannot hold on to its shape as the water slips through your fingers. Such it is with time. Slipping through our fingers constantly. Eternal and ephemeral.
