Townreads v Scumreads :: I have some downtime and want to discuss / hear other opinions on this matter.

My viewpoint is: A mix of gathering both is undoubtedly the best way of playing but I feel sometimes (generally in 3 way lylo) it's better to townhunt for what appears to be genuine. I find you can easily PoE the scum via getting townreads. I understand that realistically speaking you can hard townread the scum into autoloss but it's just as likely that you execute a sequence of mislynches on townies.

Personally, I prefer attaining townreads as I'm more likely to scumread a townie than townread a scum. Especially when it comes down to stronger players who have strong tones. Generally speaking, /experienced/ players have been trained to avoid dropping the general scumtells, rather than attempting to fake towntells.

Putting focus on townhunting, forces scum to try and fabricate towntells to escape the process of being executed in a sequence of lynches. This forces scum to try and fake looking town, rather than just avoiding looking like scum, which in turn -> produces more information from them -> giving you a better chance of reading them correctly.

Simply put: it's a lot harder for scum to fabricate genuine towntells, rather than to just avoid making scumtells.

Even from a mathematical standpoint: Townies are mathematically easier to pin, as there are more of them.

Save the case of a direct CC, townies will have a harder time townreading ( which leaves less space for town, and for them to be town ) than scumreading ( which leaves more different possibilities from their pov ). For mafia, its easier to townread than to scumread, because the genuine EM player likes buddying over towntelling; When you townread someone, you appeal to them, when you scumread someone, you do the opposite, when it comes down to it, leaving wifom and all that aside.

In a direct CC? Get a read, if you can't get one for any reason, meta like the piece of a scrub that you are. Then, stall; if your townread SR's you, your game is over anyway. Otherwise, your SR might TR you first. All that may and may not have to do with alignment, and is assuming you're town.

Or assuming you give a damn about the given game. :doge:

I often try to find townreads lately instead of scumreads and it does seem to work for me.
What also seems to work is to out the most random reads when I'm clear and look at the responses.

Completely agree. It's fairly easy to find a 100% townread and then from there out its just PoE. Any competent player shouldn't really scumtell by words. Experienced players scumtell by votes. Of course there's other ways to pressure players but that's a far more complex topic. As you said, "it's a lot harder for scum to fabricate genuine towntells, rather than to just avoid making scumtells." this is why lurking is an effective strategy if you're bad. It's better to say nothing at all then to scumtell.

Anyways, the best way to scumhunt is by PoE from townreads.

I will agree looking for genuine responses is the best way to scum hunt but everything plays a part.
