i heard blindness by josé saramago was good
the unwanted by kien nguyen is a biography about kien's life after saigon fell. it's a particularly grisly story though

it seems amazing but I don't know if I can stomach 800 pages. if nothing shorter catches my eye after I'm done with east of eden I might go for it though
