Create a Chall. Comp -- Finalists!

over 8 years

UPDATE #1: New rules have been added to Shiritori and Attack And Defend. Additionally, to incentivize hosts to host these challenges, another element to the prizes has been added:

If you host three challenges, one from EACH category, in a game (or in multiple games) and you can show me that you hosted these games via screenshot, you will receive two additional entries into the two random giveaways for people who vote in the survey. That's right, you could get THREE entries in the survey raffle total! So go out and host these challenges!

(Once you have three screenshots from the three games, PM them to me!)

Hello all, the finalists for the Create a New Challenge Competition have been decided! WOO! Because there were so many incredible entries, we decided to narrow it down to 15 entries divided evenly into 3 categories. There will be one winner in each category as well as a grand prize winner overall. Lastly, one person who votes will be randomly selected to win a prize as well. More details follow below.

The Challenges -- CLICK ON THE LINK TO VIEW RULES

Keep these things in mind when playing these challenges:

  1. Is this an intellectually stimulating challenge?
  2. How fair is this challenge?
  3. Is this a fun challenge? Will I be excited to play this in the future?
  4. Does this challenge add to the game that I am playing positively or negatively?

NOTE: The point of the pictures is so that you can send them to other people to easily explain the rules. Hosts, feel free to send them to your players!

The Prizes

Due to the gratuitous offers from Snow and Cosmo, we have greatly expanded our prizes.

20 tokens will be given to EACH winner of each category. The winner will be decided by a public vote on a survey which will be released after two weeks (or shorter if deemed necessary).

$50 will be given to the grand prize winner. This prize will be on a separate vote on the survey so that the winners of the individual categories will be different than the grand prize winner.

TWO, that's right, TWO prizes will be given out randomly to people who vote in the final survey! One will get 20 tokens and one will get Risk of Rain on Steam!

We got prizes out the wazoo!

Voting will become available in a week or so to allow for everyone to play the challenges in games.

The Fine Print

I ask that you play every challenge before voting. However, if that's not possible, I require that you at least read over the rules for every challenge you haven't played.

Each player may only vote once. Any votes are final.

For hosts, the rules have hosting tips when necessary to aid the hosting process. If you have any questions about hosting or interpretations of the rules, please PM me!

If your challenge is in the finals, please do NOT tell people which challenge is yours! The anonymity is to keep all votes as objective as possible. If it is found you are telling others, you may be disqualified.

Additionally, if your challenge is in the finals, feel free to vote, but please keep the picks as objective as possible.

That's it! I will be hosting a few games with these challenges over the coming days. Good luck to all finalists!

I'll also give my own personal review over the challenges I hosted

Tug-O-War: I hosted this along with TriAft, and it went perfectly. The teams talked about how they were going to make sure not to flood, and the ending of the challenge was actually very close, with only 10 tugs between the two teams. Overall a really simple challenge to host, but very effective when it comes to the game.

Shiritori: This one was one of my top 3, but wasn't as effective when hosting. This was mainly due to some of the players not being good with word games, so I can't dock the challenge for that. The last two players did go back and forth a few times, but that's about it. I still love this challenge concept, and hope that I can host it with more word-strong players in the future.

Faulty Memory: This one easily takes the cake for my personal favorite challenge that I've hosted so far. If you keep tabs on the entire game, you can make a very long sentence of a few things that could be falsified, and it really did challenge the two players in my game remaining. Personally, this challenge may not be the most creative, but it's a hell of a lot of fun to host!

Memory Builder: This is probably just me, but I didn't really care for this challenge (or hosting it, for that matter). I don't have much to say about it, besides the fact that it's just a knock-off version of Endurance.

Mix-N-Match: It took me a little bit to think of some combinations, but when hosted, it was extremely effective! It's a good combination of speed and mental work, trying to match together the right pairings in the quickest time. Definitely one of the better challenges out of the bunch.

Ultimate List: Again, another really good challenge. If you get the right players, this can go on forever. A few of the rounds I hosted did, while others were cut off very short (Country: Asia). I liked this one since I first saw it, and I like it even more after hosting it!

New rule for hosts! If you host AT LEAST three of these challenges in any of your games and you can document it, you will get two extra tickets into the random 20 tokens giveaway! Details in the thread.

Yall are right. Thanks for the feedback!

I will be in communication with the creator to rebalance this challenge. My initial recommendation will be to make neutral lose a point in the case when 1 on neutral and 2 on attack (or defend), as well as implementing the rule of only being allowed to go on neutral a limited number of times.

If anyone notices any other broken mechanics in any of these games, please bring it up here or via PM! I greatly appreciate that you are all testing these. :)

Then just change to Defend and Neutral. The chance that C guesses correctly all 3 times is 1/8. There is no way for C to win a point with the player who selected neutral.

C can tie it if they always pick attack
over 8 years
I don't know If I am right or wrong but in Attack and Defend when we host it at f3 and there are 2 people to who are together and one who needs to win the challenge it may become impossible for him to.For Example There are 3 players A,B,C and A,B are together A selects Attack,B selects Neutral.
Cases-
C selects Attack -- He and A gets a point
C selects Neutral -- A gets a point
C selects Defence -- B gets a point
So it will be impossible for C to win the challenge, wont it be?

that would be cool ^^^^^^

For word math I think to make it more challenging that the number the player comes up with, they have to make a word that long.

Ex: THINKING - HIGHER + HIGH = 6 letters

Answer: Answer

The guessing player scores a point. Will also add on recommended player size for Alliance/Luck challenges.

Will make changes in the morning.

Thanks for pointing this out!

Luck of the Irish

Every round, the host will pick a range (let's say, 20-65). Players send a number within that range. Then host chooses a random number from 1 to 100. If the number matches a player's guess, WHO wins WHAT? If nobody matches, then the player closest to the number will win a point. Nobody will score in the event of a tie between the closest players. First to 3 or spot-on wins.

I just hosted a 6 player game with a whooping 3 challenge on this list and want to give some review on each:
Putting it Together - i liked the premise of this, but it kind of flops in late game. even if you have 24 players, when it gets down to 6, whoever guesses a team wins. also my personal thought was that people could guess their teammate to a) throw people off and b) give their partner a chance to guess and even though they wouldn't make much progress that way it still feels like an odd semantic to have

Numbered Forts - I was most optimistic about this one, because I figured it would have the most alliance and strategy involved. It has merit, but 4 people on 1 means the 1 cannot win. Also, I feel as if there's sort of a hierarchy for lack of a better word as the challenge goes on, and what basically happens is the lower point people try to go on the same one as the higher point people to block the win, and neither of them score, giving the middle pointed people the points and basically forcing the people on the bottom into auto loss.

Attack or Defend - I can't say much since I as host made a mistake on this one a LOT. People were complaining about some of the results not making sense, but I like this one since I've seen and played it when it's been hosted correctly, and I think this is a great f3 challenge (might need to go to 5, though.)

What about the rules needs clarifying?

For Luck of the Irish, mind clarifying on the rules?

nice set of challenges, I think these are all cool and I'll probably host a good load in my late night games and pick my faves

some lame names I thought of for Piece it Together are "Pairs" and "Peas in a Pod" so if the sender likes those then nice

Friendly reminder that you CANNOT get a good understanding of these challenges by just reading about them. Hosts: Please try to incorporate them into your games, especially the larger more stressful ones so that players can get a more full understanding of these challenges!

My faves are Mad Gab and World Travel.
Probably because I only won in those.

And then there's the one I made, which I can't say or i'll get disqualified for it.

My personal favorites from this are Piece It Together, Tug-O-War, Shiritori, and Faulty Memory. I'm definitely implementing some of these challenges into my game
