So I'm walking to class through my university's library parking lot, and I spot a brand new Iphone 6s sticking up from behind the wheel of a car. My guess is this person broke up with their lover and said lover tried to destroy the iPhone, but I saved the thing. So of course I'm posting on my uni's facebook lost and found page and asking around trying to find the rightful owner, because I'm not a douche.
But my question is, how long am I morally obligated to hold onto this thing before I sell it?
I disagree, Arcbell. Wanting a second opinion or three on what the "right" thing to do in a situation is natural and not unethical. "Mooching off other people's morality" is a very strange way to put it. It's more of an ethics question, in this case, and he wanted to know what other people thought was adequate so he could feel confident he wasn't doing something wrong. You could say that IS "following his moral compass."
Personally, I just hope the person who claimed it actually typed in their passcode or something before leaving with it, so we know that was the actual owner and not an unethical hacker/someone planning to sell it to such. I wish I'd thought to bring that up earlier JIC. I'm sure I'm worried over nothing tho.
I think you misunderstood me Hibiki, I wasn't saying he should do what he wants with it, rather that he should follow his own moral compass, because there isn't anything else that should be holding him back.
I think you read a little too far into my "Hey Yahoo Answers, how long is the finders-keepers law. Also, I found a freaking Iphone 6S under a car wheel" thread.
To be fair, that's exactly how I saw this thread. My apologies if I was mistaken.
Claimed by some fat dude. Not even some pretty girl I could try to seduce with my awesome integrity. Thanks, universe.

What other people on this site think really has nothing to do with your own personal moral code and how you should behave.
actually everyone should consider what i'd think of their actions before doing them not like what everyone on this site would think but me specifically

Well I didn't get an iPhone or laid but at least I got this thread
Why are you mooching off other people's morality. If you don't have your own feeling of obligation to hold onto the phone, sell it. If you do, hold on to it for as long as you feel obligated.
What other people on this site think really has nothing to do with your own personal moral code and how you should behave.
"hey you, why don't you follow my moral code of "i do what i want"???? it's far superior than what you're doing in this thread!"

those things have find my iphone on them so if there's no code and that's disabled, i'd wait like a couple weeks. but selling isn't nice i'd turn it in to a lost and found or w/e

ive never actually owned an iphone either, but im pretty sure what i said is true the way apple accounts work now
i believe you should be able to see if they have missed calls or texts (you might not be able to view them depending on how they set it), so if you have none of those after a week, theyre probably not looking for that phone
if it just happened now though, they mightve thought they left it at home and havent bothered really looking for it yet though or something like that

is find my iphone turned on as a default now? or do you actually have to set it up. i believe you have to link your phone to your account, so they should be in the icloud blah blah
either way, i imagine if you're able to get the phone on, you should be be able to find the owner if they were attempting to locate the phone
It's on, but locked. I'm not an apple guy, so I know nothing about it.

Well then WhiteMarauder, I guess you are Holier Than Me, because I'm going to try to find the owner for 2 weeks and then I'm going to consider it a boon of good fortune : )
