if I die and am proven wrong, and at the pearly gates I get turned away, not for any misdeeds I did, but because I didnt accept jesus into my heart as my lord and savior, well, I dont think I want to share the same location as such a vengeful, self centered god anyway
I'd say truth is a modern priority. In many societies, religion has helped growth and dervelopment. Many rules they are based on, are related to survival principles.
kind of like how Christians think God wants them to go to church every sunday? when did he say that exactly? Theyre simply making assumptions about what God would do or -should- do based on their own personal moral judgements
yup, but the difference here is that it makes sense to worship God in a community of people who also believe. the Bible says as much.
but the problem comes when you use your own personal moral judgement to pretend that God is something that He clearly isn't, if you actually read the Bible

also I think youre going further and projecting your own ideas of the Christian God on what jesus actually said on heaven in hell.
Heaven is simply spending eternity with God. Hell is simply spending eternity without God. Which Christians kind of interpretted as a pretty big punishment I guess

On the contrary, people who do not believe are not automatically sent to Hell. God is not a hateful being; I believe Him to be a loving and forgiving God, which is why we are able to live after life. He forgives us for our sins. If you are a "pretty decent guy," then I believe you are actually on the route to Heaven.
Food for thought: you should think about where you're getting this belief from.
This belief doesn't fit with the Bible - which is (I think) what you claim to believe, so you're simply making assumptions about what God would do or -should- do based on your own personal moral judgments.
In other words, you're kind of projecting your own personal moral values on God even though the God of every major religion disagrees with you pretty severely.

I was raised protestant. Over time, I became less religious
not by choice. I can't choose to believe in something that has no basis in fact, let alone reality. no matter how comfy the idea of a greater purpose and an afterlife may be

you're saying things like "things that don't happen to a lot of people also don't happen to my family therefore god is real and i believe in him", you can't bash someone else's points
That's probably the best argument I'll get today. Thanks for it and sorry for having wasted your time.

No, not really. It's just a dumb thing to say imo, like most of the recent posts in this thread
