This... website. The amount of numbers are going to fall.
Why?
Many reasons.
The first being the over sensitive attitude of the mod team. Which was directly influenced by Dr. Lucid.
Second being the collapse of sandbox.
Obviously Christopherzilla was the only personality holding it up. It has since decayed into a circlejerk not unlike any other custom lobby, and if not for the prodigious following Christopherzilla had built up, would be dead already if it weren't for the influx of DanganMafia rejects who flooded Sandbbox after the Dangan lobby collapsed under its own spastication.
The Third issue
Where is new traffic going to come from?
Where is this site advertised? Why would anyone new come here?
Town of Salem has taken all the elements of Mafia and streamlined them. Mainstreamed them. It's currently a game on Steam.
This is still a free browser game. It's revenue is based on ads. It's based on visitors. It's based on accidental clicks on those ads.
I turn my adblock off for this site, and this site only.
Even though... I know this website is dying. I can feel it in every game that would have filled instantly this time two years ago. I feel it every time a game of classic mafia doesnt fill. I feel it every time a 12 player game in Sandbox doesn't fill.
Sitting in those 12 player games in Sandbox reminds me how it was like in Comp lobby waiting for a game to fill, sure, if you waited a while they'd fill. But one day... They didn't. Then they didn't fill day after. Or the day after that.
You know why those comp games never filled?
Arrogance. Arrogance and cheating. People who played in "Comp" lobby saw themselves above everyone else, which was anyone who either played unranked or classic. The "pros" from Comp chastised anyone who wandered into their sacred circlejerk of professional mafia.
Anyone who fell in to their trap would find themselves lynched immediately, and if they were town screams of "BUT OMG THEY WERE SO SCUMMY", and of course if they were actually mafia, "OMFG THEY WERE SO OBVIOUS WHAT A NUB!" followed.
The death of the "Main Lobby" will be more subtle, but ultimately similar.
At first gold heart games will stop filling, because people will recognise that overly competitive people populate these games, and they do not welcome newcomers.
Like it is now, creating a game of "classic", (which used to be the most popular setup and the one which had the fundamentals of every other setup), these will not fill. People expect Call Of Duty in their browser games. Not to pit their wits against fellow human beings, they expect those wits to be used agressively, not inquisitively. They prefer the obvious to the subtle. They prefer... "fancy pants " to classic.
No one plays classic anymore...
This is why the numbers will fall. This is why people won't hang around. This is why people won't care. No one plays classic anymore.
You can't play BV in real life. You cant adequately ensure Jan 2.0 can be played in real life. VDLI in real. life. would be a guessing game.
All of these "competitive" setups that people talk about, mean absolutely nothing without a grounding in the fundamentals of mafia. In the idea of the informed versus the uninformed.
The select few versus the overall knowing.
That is what this game used to be about.
There were no cops, no docs, no prs of any sort.
A pure scumhunt.
Using visual and bodily reactions, as well as interpersonal interactions and accusations.
The second half we are used to. The interactions between members of a team, the bussing as we call it, chainsawing when they're town...
We Use so many nouns and verbs to describe what we do. "Bussing" "Chainsawing" et cetera et cetera
And yes, it could be argued that this online version has an nth% of the uninformed uncovering the informed[uninformed]town uncovering the[mafia]... but you'll never know. You'll never know if you were a "scumhunter" or if you were just lucky. Think of all of the hammers you've ever made that weren't mechanically confirmed. How many did you get right, and how many did you get wrong. How many of those were a 50/50 hammer. How often did you congratulate yourself for getting it right? How often did you rue the mishammer?
Therein lies the predicament, was it based on "scumhunting" or was it purely chance. Our ego would lead us to believe the former, but probability would lead us to the latter.
If this website is to survive it must go back to basics. Games of "classic mafia" must supercede "fancy pants". "FancyPants" is ultimately based on probability and intangibility.
What this community needs, and I say community instead of website because without the community there is no website, is a classic competition.
A competition purely composed of games of classic mafia. Naysayers will say "it's too easy to cheat" and etc but no setup in this quick online forum has proven itself uncheatable. There are mods who can attest to this, a lot of them having been cheaters in other setups. And if anything, in such a simple competition involving such a simple game of classic mafia, how could these mods not catch someone who was bending the rules?
Classic Mafia started this website.
It's my hope that Classic Mafia will save this website/
