what happened to this site by me

deletedover 9 years

i'm just gonna start here by saying that when i first joined this site, back around 4 years ago, this place was interesting as heck. i played classic mafia in the training lobby and i thought i was an absolute genius anytime i got it right and as my reads and manipulations improved, and this game had some real world relevance, it wasn't just wasting time. and more, there were literal gods on this site, players who u were looking at thinking, 'there's something, there's a goal, there's competition', whatever. but that's not how it is anymore.

now u may not think it, but this game has actual intrigue. it does have a real world relevance. everyone wants to fancy themselves halfway to being a psychologist, everyone wants to fancy themselves manipulative or perceptive, this is where u come to be all those things. it's like poker. that game's never going to die because it's pitting sheer wit against sheer wit, because it's pretty much brute force warfare. poker is a game that anyone can play, supposedly, and one whose skills transfer across to pretty much anything else u want to pursue. and this game's the same. i mean we're throwing eq up alongside iq these days. this game is actual power, intelligence. so why is this site dying? it's because the idiots are taking over. i'm not even joking.

there is a huge - and i mean huge - necessity for psychological belittlement in our lives. that's what's happening here. it's like the charm in the harry potter series, 'riddikulus', that beats the boggart, makes a joke of the scary thing it's taking the form of. that's what j.k. rowling was getting at there. it's why edgy atheists are cast as 'fedoras', typically fat dudes toting katanas. it's why hitler's birthday is now international weed smoking day. it's why bad jokes are funny. heck, it's why u watch most of what u watch on tv too. it's why manchester united, 'the red devils', made such an absolute fortune. it's why we put monsters on cereal boxes. and so on, and so on, and so on. most of what we do is towards psychological belittlement. it creates pretty much every monster and angel and just everything. and that's what's happening here. this game had the legs swept out from underneath it. we're all playing strip poker now. we're all just laughing idiots now.

training lobby should never have been removed. fancy pants shouldn't exist. reverse mafia shouldn't ever have existed. the comp lobby should have stayed forever the place that good player went to play serious mafia. instead the whole site is just one big sandbox now. everyone has a trophy from a bunch of dumb lobbies. the fame page is a joke, just a random scattering of names. worse even, the only thing that's really very instantly relatable with on the fame page is the 'highest total score' chart, basically telling any new player who arrives here that this site is just dumb as heck and all we really reward is being here for a longass time. lucid got it into his head that he was making the most money out of this site being a social place i guess, and now it's dying because he tried to make a quick buck. i mean when was the last time anyone half decent showed up? there's no other explanation for their not showing up anymore but that this site doesn't have any punch anymore. and now the site's just wilting away in general because it's already conquered before even joining it. even the idiots are joining and thinking this site is dumb. no need to fret, no need to waste my time. but whatever i guess. i just think it's sort of a shame. guns and bombs and orcs and fiddlers. nobody's going to play through any of that stuff thinking they're actually learning something. bring back the cop and the doc and the plain old mafia, let people think they're training to be heroes or b-astards again. but whatever i guess. pandering to the bunch of idiots we have on the site currently only buys us that bunch of idiots.

they regularly cc when guilty
over 9 years
They don't cc when guiltied. The only "tactic" I've seen employed by mafia is faking guilties which generally works against them.

oh, well that's fair enough then, my apologies

In the CM/FT era training players at least cc'd as scum. Scum don't do anything but wait to be lynched in FP. They don't cc and the only active thing they do is fake guilties which usually blows up in their face. You didn't see any of the "skills" you listed because CM isn't so blatantly townsided that town can fake with no risk to town.

I mean I guess you can't actually define the class of players that role blue and wait for self vote as skill capped, but at least the CM zombies weren't mental vegtables.

"maybe" DLYV players were the core of the comp base and setups weren't drastically impacted until the comp lobbies were merged and training lobby solidified as pointfarm lobby. I don't know how bad you have to be at this game to think that "Main Lobby" compares to "Bronze Lobby".

You say that however it was blatant when a training player was in a compp game. They were a step up compared to the FP vegtables but had the same terrible anti-comp attutude that made them resistant to learning or adapting.

em might die and become a glorified chatroom, but competitive chat mafia still has some mileage left in it as an idea, imo. just needs a good push

competitive chat mafia has always been a game of who has the most friends in the lobby.

so no, in truth, it has never had mileage. it was a farce from the start, at least in the epicmafia conception of it.

My friend was costing me games during my run. I ran solely with opposition.

Reverse should have never existed I agree and custom lobbies have further diluted our player base having players sticking to their tumblr RP lobbies never actually giving the real game a chance because all their other friends are too busy pretending to be anime girls with huge wow that was censored seriously???. lol

Agreed, that's why people like Maxwell or Gira can repeatedly stomp the yard on secret alts. Because it's a game of who has the most friends in the lobby.

maybe like the overall average skill level has gone up because new players are forced to play with high skill level players, but for the high skill level players, unless you enjoy playing with a bunch of idiots, there's no purpose in getting better, or playing at all for that matter

i agree with you 100% there.

and yeah, you're right. there is definitely a future for a new form of mafia game somewhere else, if done correctly.

it's a real shame lucid has yet to hand over the task of coding to anyone.. the site still has room for growth, imo. can't blame him though, given the people who know coding that have worked / been frequent visitors on the site... they've tended to be counterproductive, to say the least.

probably why you shouldnt take a psychological/social party game, originally designed to be played in person, seriously.

people were negative because the game caused them to be that way. well, that and the report system.

people took poker seriously and it's worked out alright.

i don't think mafia causes people to be negative. epicmafia might, but it's not the mafia component that does it. not all people have the sportsmanship to handle mafia, though

maybe that's the key. on the surface, mafia is a super-accessible game, but to be brutally honest not everyone can "handle" it

yeah, em might have to die. text-based real-time mafia is still a medium to be explored, though

i know it's a pretty cheesy and general-willy thing to say "just be nice", but imo that's the real issue that's caused em to decline

i think instead of struggling to make people get better at competitive mafia, we should just show them that it's fun and rewarding. they will naturally get better with their own motivation. (and give them resources to get better, but that is a secondary focus to make comp mafia look appealing.**)

"unfortunately" that might involve toning down the level of toxicity. an angry atmosphere only attracts angry people; a happy atmosphere attracts everyone.

i'm not just talking about the level of anger in comp games - psh, most players don't even get to see that - this is something that's seeped into all places on our site.

**footnote: that being said, WHERES OUR FCJKA;ING WIKI??/?

I joined in 2010 when /v/ was playing their 20 man setups here non-stop for a few weeks. When that got boring I started playing comp, and my god, it was so much more fun. And so intense. People like Hibiki and LOLUMAD would bring out ridiculous scumreads D1 and...they'd be spot on off of nothing at all.

Or those players would lead the town for three days, lynching two mafia along the way and a poor blue, before hammering in lylo and revealing they were scum.

I posted it somewhere else, but this has really become lowest common denominator a lot of the time. If you voice a FoS - you're scum. If you try and guide the town because the PR is braindead and confused - you're scum.

It's quite sad.
