De-Comp this stupid setup and blacklist it from future competition. If someone playing B2NS, Andrea or TEO has their trophy robbed by someone playing YYC then that's just absurd. The fact that YYC already has 27 plays, whilst the others are getting nowhere near as many plays, goes to show what sort of state the website is in right now, at least regarding competitive mafia.

Jan 2.0 is certainly not comparable with YYC and HI and would easily make any shortlist.

I wasn't comparing playstyles as much as I was comparing the amount of people who complain about them being "bad setups"

please put HI as the next setup on the list to be banned

GOD FORBID WE SHOULD LET A FUN SET UP BE COMPED SO THAT MORE PEOPLE THAN JUST NORMAL COMP PLAYERS GET INTERESTED IN PLAYING COMP! OMG!!!!!!! FIDDLER AND GUNS AND FRAMER AND PARA ARE SOO BAD! I"M GONNA COMPLAIN SOME MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol. but seriously, I don't get whats so bad about YYC. ya it's kinda a coinflip interms of who wins, but shouldn't you be able to have a little fun in comp rounds instead of playing the same 4 scumhunting setups OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER? cuz that is pretty much what happens. the older, "purist" players say all setups suck except B2NS, VDLI, Basic Variant etc etc..... And I agree those are good set ups, but sometimes scumhunting setups over and over and over again in comp is repetitive and gets boring. adding set ups like YYC or Jan 2.0 or HI etc keeps things fresh and fun IMO. :)

the point is that this sort of thing can be fun in red hearts, but competitive play should actually stick to setups that are, you know, competitive

In all honesty, I'd rather have a few bad setups allowed to be comped every so often over playing the same 3 setups every round.

looks like me and rutab agree on something for once :)

Well take the closest case as an example.

I'd expect pretty much anyone who has been on EpicMafia for a relatively long time, and is actually playing YYC, would probably voice that it's not fit for purpose if they were asked to answer honestly.

Me. I love YYC and think it's a great and fun setup. The atmosphere is fun and usually hectic. It is a horrible competitive setup though.

The arbitrary mod decisions regarding setups have come up quite frequently in recent months.

One thinks of ol' Germatron and the mythical townsidedness.

Also Armed & Dangerous, which is rather arbitrarily excluded already.

And yes, limiting the freedom is the entire point, Rutab. When people are consistently using that freedom to make the site worse in the long-run.

Having a fixed amount of setups sucks though. Obviously the setup list could be edited at any time, but it limits the freedom of choosing whatever setup you want when you win your trophy. I think it should definitely be the mods' job to "arbitrarily decide X is allowed and Y is not" since usually they're not wrong. Even if they were, a thread like this would happen and it will most likely be de-comped. How often is there that bad of a setup that someone makes a thread to get rid of it? Not that often.

It'd lose a community vote without a shadow of a doubt - you're trying to fix the community playing style after all.

I was toying with the idea of creating a shortlist of viable setups and rigidly allowing only those setups to get comped whilst I was admin, but it was a massive change.

I do dislike any 'in the middle approach' where mods arbitrarily decide X is allowed and Y is not each round, though.

A community vote would suffice imo.

I agreed with everything until you started spewing nonsense about "the state of the website" because that's a really big leap from "what a bad setup"

That's pretty ignorant, Rutab. Before the lobby merge, YYC would never have accumulated more plays than any of the other setups listed.

Ok? Setups that are being played and are bad don't have any correlation to the state of the site because opinions change. Some people like certain setups more than others. YYC, imo, is very fun. Should it be comped? No, but that doesn't mean that anyone who likes it is wrong. "The state of the site" was thrown very loosely.

Dude just shut up. The OP clearly states that I was referring to the website regarding competitive play. You're talking about the community.

I don't know why you're just throwing this out there now then because it's been a prevalent problem for a while now.

If only people had the ability to play other setups without using their competitive hearts, in a place where they were still moderated.

Oh, wait.

Yeah but they don't contribute towards a laddered ranking system over a short space of time, unlike the gold heart games.

I agree with you, Mika, but it's about pleasing the whole site. We've been on this website for a long time and have tried out numerous setups, whilst some people are still pretty new and want to give everything a whirl.

It's quite difficult to please everyone though, especially when you want to ward off stagnation. Obviously if the setup pool narrows down more and more then every other round is going to be VDLI, BV or Janitorial 2.0, as it has been in the past.

I was personally never that bothered by rounds being controlled by the same good setups. The reason those setups controlled rounds was because they were good; and balanced. All the people calling for new setups were just asking for inferiority.

It's like how Mafiascum only has a few official setups - they're just the best ones.
