Agreed - hints of totalitarianism resound throughout the democratic government of the US.

Here's some political theory for you guys: Nuke 'em. LOL

Also, to try to compare the United States to smaller European nations is somewhat absurd to me. While we share similar backgrounds, we have different factors that make trying to run the United States like France or Germany rather difficult.
I'd say the main issue would be population and size. The U.S. is the third most populated country in the world. California alone has more people in it than Canada or Australia. Why does it surprise people a large country like ours is going to have cultural and political divides that cause friction and tension within our nation?
To give you a better idea, imagine if the E.U. was actually a nation state, and all the European countries that make it up were just states in a federal union. See how that might cause problems? The analogy is not perfect, but gives insight into the U.S. situation.

All I have to say on the matter is there are some things America does really well, and there are some things America really sucks at. We are nation just like all others - we have flaws.

I feel the same way about The Republic that Plato did. It's only actually a good idea if I get to be the philosopher king

This thread is now about one of Plato's most well-known works, "The Republic". Your thoughts, Sonseray?

I'd say it's just the class that sucks, but actually what I think makes the class suck is the demographic of people who want to major in political science and I think it's probably around the same nationwide. Conservatives are basically given a license to be racist in this class, it's a riot.
That sucks. I really enjoy reading/studying politics. I'll probably give a political science class a try and see if it sucks as badly as you say.

Literally the entire class is staunch conservatives arguing with staunch liberals about what they perceive to be black or white issues, when in fact they are both wrong and ignorant and there are more than 2 solutions to any given problem.

Oh my god, there is nothing I would recommend less. For the love of god, be a plumber before you take a political science class. I was promised an objective analysis of American bipartisan politics. I received an exercise IN bipartisan politics
Can you explain how your class is awful? I'm considering a political science major and I would need to prepare myself

America has a bipartisan political system that could have been ripped straight from a George Orwell novel

there's this study done on thinking in liberals and conservatives where proponents of the two had to look at a computer screen that's flashing Ws but changing over to Ms every now and again, basically to test reaction, how the proponents of each received these changes to Ms - they had to hit a button every time it happened. anyway what were the results? liberals did fine, but conservatives couldn't hack it. they messed up every time it changed over. poor b*stards just couldn't handle the Ws changing to Ms. and that's conservatism for you. keep everything the same, right down to the Ws and the Ms. solid political thinking, right? i, too, am politically apathetic.
Every time an American tells me that black people commit more crimes because they are incarcerated more (also a direct quote from today's political science class) I'm going to take a fat huff of air duster until I agree with them

In capitalist America we can't decide whether or not science is real 50 odd years after landing on the moon. I wonder how we got up there
