No atheism talk here, just religion and fun stuff. I'm writing a 10-12 page paper comparing norse paganism with christianity and Mesopotamian polytheism.
Not to one who believes in the God of Christianity, or the God of Islam or Judaism, since the title of God only belongs to the one who has the power of "God" who incidentally....is God.
would it be reaching to claim that God and Satan were once one being and they were separated at the end of the old testament or beginning of the new testament?
Well, since Satan and God interact heavily in the Old Testament and there is no basis in scripture for that being the case, it is kind of a reach tbh
Lucifer translates to bringer of dawn. It depends on which bible you read too because some bibles give a glorified description of Heaven. How do you figure Satan and God are the same people? It's pretty clear that they are not. They both have similarities and they both have differences as well.
Well, the second verse refers to earth. The third verse is a quote from Jesus. And I'm pretty sure that it doesn't translate to morning star, no.
I mean, regardless of your beliefs, I don't really understand the concept of God being Satan, especially due to how clearly the Bible draws a line between the two
I mean, I'm not arguing, just questioning because this class brings up a lot of questions that don't get answered because there's no time.
Aren't Jesus and God both part of the trinity that constitutes God?
I'm just wondering if there's a light and a dark side to God, since God was vengeful in the old testament and more benevolent in the new testament, would it be reaching to claim that God and Satan were once one being and they were separated at the end of the old testament or beginning of the new testament?
I thought it was Lightbringer
Light bringer and morning star both refer to the same thing, I believe.
Also one last thing:
"AND Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel." (I Chronicles 21:1)
"AND again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah." (II Samuel 24:1)
In Anton LaVey's The Satanic Bible, Lucifer is one of the Four Crown Princes of Hell, particularly that of the East. Lord of the Air, and is called "Bringer of Light, the Morning Star, Intellectualism, Enlightenment."
Really Lucifer and Satan are two different entities.
PROJECTMATT. please respond to this prompt: God and Satan are the same being, however they are polar opposites.
If we're referring to Christian theology, then I disagree. Satan and God are opposites in nearly every way. However, they are clearly stated to be separate beings. If we assume that they are actually the same, we have to deal with a lot of verses that come off as schizophrenic. Satan tempting God in the desert turns into God tempting Himself in the desert. God has conversations with his "evil side", God kicks himself out of Heaven, etc etc.
In Revelations, doesn't the description of Heaven sound bleak?
"And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
Also these:
"Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench." (I Kings 18:38)
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." (Matthew 10:34-37)
Isn't Lucifer translated to "morning star"?:
"I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." (Revelation 22:16)

Definitely. But "The Bible promotes cruel slavery and kidnapping!' is generally a misconception, in my opinion.

Thanks for that post, Steven. I was trying to decide if I should point that out. The context of slavery in those verses are very different from what we think of when we see the word "slavery". Now, religion in general and other verses about slavery are on a totally different playing field, but that's a common misconception that should be clarified.
I know what angle you're trying to play. But the bible doesn't clarify what kind of "slavery" it's trying to promote. It just says slavery. There was no "different" form of slavery back then. Slavery was slavery.
Most people assume that slavery means "kidnapping a slave and abusing them", etc etc. The Bible actually prohibits this. There are other verses concerning slavery that I will admit have left me very confused, but the context in the verse that Steven posted is against abuse.

People have used their religions to justify slavery for a long time.
People in the south used quotes from the bible during the civil war to justify slavery. Look it up.
Ok I'm only going to clear 1 small thing up.
People use religion all the time to justify things. Just like people justified slavery with bible quotes, there were Christian people who wanted to abolish slavery.
When people say slavery (at least in the US) they always think of pre- civil war slavery. But I just want to clear up that such slavery is not what the bible refers to. Specifically...
Exodus 21:16 He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.
That is not allowed, and that was the foundation of the slavery most people think of when they hear the word.
Just had to clear that small thing up. I know the bible does give instructions on how to treat slaves and whatnot, I'm not interested in arguing about whether that would still be okay or not biblically speaking. Steven out.
