Top Ten Doctor Who Episodes

over 9 years

To all you lonely Whovians on EpicMafia...

...this thread is for you!

Here I rank my personal favorite Top Ten Doctor Who episodes of Series 1-7.

I will do a ranking of Series 8 when I am able to see all of it. (Spoiler Alert - Flatline and Listen are pretty high on the list!)

Spot 10: The God Complex

To kick off my list i thought I'd begin with somewhat of a contoversial choice...however I think this episode is one of Matt Smith's best.

The whole 1980's hotel setting adds to the tension and sense of dread evident throughout the episode. The characters are well defined, the pacing is solid, and it would have been an acceptable sendoff to Amy and Rory for good.

Spot 9: Rose

Of the 4 intro-to-the-doctor episodes, this one has a soft spot in my hear. It was MY FIRST episode of Doctor Who, even though it was a little bit goofy with the trash can scene.

What a way to start a show.

Spot 8: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

"Are you my mommy?"

shudders

Seriously, gas-mask zombies in WW2 is one of the scariest things Moffat has thought up, and he created the Weeping Angels!

So much character development, it felt like I was watching a full-length movie. Eccleston at his finest, Piper with Barrowman, this is how you make a piece of film/TV.

Just think that 11 is with Churchill at this time as well, and he knows exactly what is going on...

Spot 7: The Eleventh Hour

Oh Matt. What an episode to start on. It can only go down from here.

And it did. Regardless, this episode is so spooky. It introduces way more questions then it answers, but that's my favorite part about it. (why are there no ducks in the duck pond?"

Edges out "Rose" by the smallest of margins.

Spot 6: Dalek

This is how you make a Dalek story. Eccleston's scene with the beast is one of my favorite TV moments of all time. Van Statten makes for a menacing villain who is motivated by money. The only downside is that "DALEKS CAN FLY NOW? WHAT???"

Spot 5: Amy's Choice

The pure tension of who Amy chooses is wonderful. Also both realities are equally interesting, and Toby's performance as the Dream Lord is scarily good. All of the development, all of the monsters, it's stellar. Amy and Rory at their finest.

Spot 4: The Waters of Mars

This episode is scary. Plain hide-behind-the--couch scary. Having the Doctor know what will happen to everyone, and then HIM INTERFERING IN A FIXED POINT just shows how far he is willing to go to save a few lives. Acting is stellar, the threat is nervewracking, just an all around good episode.

Spot 3: Father's Day

This will certainly turn a few heads. I love this episode. The fact that it takes the age-old concept of going back to save someone you lost...and showing the consequences of that...I love this. Billie Piper in this is amazing as seeing her dad for the first time. The Doctor also acts as the one who has to play the bad cop, but you know he's right. The reapers were a lil' underwhelming tho...but that's just nitpicky. My favorite episode of the Eccleston era.

Spot 2: Blink

'WAT BLINK ISN'T NUMBER ONE UR CRAZY MYTHS WAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR TIME'

Don't get me wrong, this is Moffat's best episode since...this. This defines the creepiness that Doctor Who is known for. Carey Mulligan stars as an amateur investigator whose friend goes missing, only statues are the clues. So creepy, well acted, it won the FREAKING HUGO AWARD! However, there is a story better...

Honorable Mentions

The Doctor's Wife

  • Neil Gaiman's Writing
  • Karen/Arthur's Acting
  • The TARDIS is hot

Cold War

  • Clara actually DOES something
  • The Ice Warrior redesign
  • Fast Pacing

AND THE NUMBER ONE BEST DOCTOR WHO EPISODE OF SEASONS 1 - 7 IS...

Don't.

Spot 1: Midnight

The tense, claustrophobic atmosphere really gets to you. Spending 40 minutes on that tin can is enough for me. Since the whole point of the episode is saying 'humans are the monsters' is chilling. Everything about this is scarily scary. AMAZING ACTING (yes that is Colin Morgan) just adds to the whole equation. The first time i watched this I couldn't sleep. imo, 'Blink' has the substance, but this has a distinct style which adds to the episode's greatness.

Well that's my list. Leave a comment on how you think it's wrong!

Alright I'm tired of writing long descriptions so

6: Kicked off a season worth of suspense, also the introduction of the Silence. Great episode that leaves the audience wondering what the heck is going on.

5. It was great to see the struggles of one of the best artists ever, how The Doctor and Amy helped him and Matt Smith was so funny in this episode. Also it was cool to see The Doctor and Amy admire anyone except themselves

4. My most hated but one of the best episodes ever. Hate it cuz the ending, love it cuz well it's honestly a great episode that ties together a lot of the mysterys throughout the season. This was one of Tennants best

Kyle how would you rank the companions? Mine are:

7. Mickey
6. Rory
5. Clara
4. Martha
3. Amy
2. Rose
1. Donna

Oddly enough, Kyle, turn left made the #1 spot in my list because of Donna, and not Rose. Catherine Tate's performance was marvellous, and not only that, but the emotional depth that the episode plunges into is almost unparalleled in any other episode

I was never a Donna fan, but I can definitely see it soaring up to #1 if you were. She did a great job, but since I love Rose so much she was the star of that episode to me.

7. Mickey
6. Donna
5. Rory
4. Martha
3. Amy
2. Clara
1. Rose

My list is probably extremely off to most people, I know a lot of people loved Donna and didn't really like Martha. Donna just wasn't really my cup of tea.

Also could if I could throw in one of the shorter companions, Wilfred would probably be put in front of Clara at #2. I know he only showed up in a couple of episodes, but man was he amazing

7. Love it, love it, love it. Reminiscing about this episode, I may have rated it to low. So creepy and for the first time you get to see The Doctor unleashed. So Doctor Who is generally extremely cheesy, but I thought that since The Doctor didn't have anyone help control himself, it meant that the unpredictable could happen at any moment. At it pretty much did. This is just one of those episodes where by the end of it you're just like "wow." The relationship between the Doctor and the astronaut, the doctor deciding to reverse time, the way the disease got spread throughout the ship, the ending and the lead up to the next episodes. All of those factors just make it an amazing episode.

rrgh...you actually liked doomsday?

I didn't like the result of it, but I can't say it wasn't one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever. At least imo

8. Nothing special about this episode other than the fact that it's a really good episode. I'm not sure if it's the giant time gaps between everytime The Doctor sees The Queen that makes it so intriguing but it's a good episode. It may have also been because the Queen lady is really really hot. I think this was one of the few episodes where I felt bad for the antagonists but at the same time completely disgusted. I get wanting to go home, everybody wants to go home and I don't think they really knew the aftermath of building their ship. Also the ending was quite sad. Come to think of it it's a pretty sad episode with nothing extremely eye catching, but it's impossible to say it's not one of the best out there

9: Rose, oh Rose, I miss Rose. I missed Rose the second Doomsday ended and all throughout Martha's series as well as the majority of Donna's. Seeing her help Donna to save the Doctor is incredible, especially seeing how smart she's become with the whole Alien stuff. Rose had been so reliant on The Doctor to get her through situations and before she met the doctor she was just working in this random store that nobody cared about. With this episode the audience can see that she can make it on her own and that she's become more incredible than she previously was. This episode probably doesn't make many top 10's unless the author is infatuated with Rose. Good thing I am so it makes my top 10

10: Matt Smith was by far the goofiest doctor and watching him trying to fit into regular society brought his goofiest out. Unfortunately, these two episodes are really the only two times he gets to interact with modern society for a sustained period of time(The power of three doesn't count) so I enjoyed them while they lasted. The plot was rather dull in both episodes, although the in The Lodger it was rather creepy with the old man telling people to come in or whatever, but Matt played an excellent role which is why it's #10 for me

10. The Lodger and Closing time, bassically the episodes with Craig.
9.Turn Left
8. The Girl in the Fireplace
7. The Water of Mars
6. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the moon
5. Vincent and the Doctor
4. Doomsday
3. Silence of the Library/Forest of the Dead
2. The Doctor Dances/The Empty Child
1. Blink
