MLS is Elite Superthread

about 10 years

What is MLS? MLS is short for Major League Soccer. MLS is an American/Canadian soccer (or football for the europeans) league formed in 1996 which currently hosts 19 teams.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/ - The website itself is nicely run and also covers the USMNT.

Current teams include:

West:

FC Dallas (W1) - 57

  • LA Galaxy (W2) - 51

  • Vancouver Whitecaps (W3) - 50

  • Portland Timbers (W4) - 50

  • Seattle Sounders (W5) - 48

  • Sporting Kansas City (W6) - 48

  • San Jose Earthquakes (W7) - 47

  • Houston Dynamo (W8) - 42

  • Real Salt Lake (W9) - 41

  • Colorado Rapids (W10) - 37

East:

New York Red Bulls (E1) - 57

  • D.C United (E2) - 51

  • Columbus Crew (E3) - 50

  • Toronto FC (E4) - 49

  • Montreal Impact (E5) - 48

  • New England Revolution (E6) - 47

  • Orlando City SC (E7) - 44

  • New York City FC (E8) - 37

  • Philadelphia Union (E9) - 34

  • Chicago Fire (E10) - 30

Note: Large text means the team is competing for a spot at the supporters shield which is most points in the regular season. Normal bold means clinched playoff spot. Italicized means they are still competing for a playoff spot and have not cliched it yet.

What's happening this season:

  • Chivas USA to be removed - New LAFC team announced for 2017

  • Orlando City SC + NYCFC to join eastern conference / SKC + Dynamo to western

  • MLS logo officially remodeled

Why MLS?

You should follow MLS for many reasons:

1) You can follow many USMNT stars such as Clint Dempsey, Micheal Bradley, and Jozy Altidore

2) MLS is one of the fastest growing soccer leagues in the world right now. While it may not have the quality of EPL or La Liga, the league is growing better every year.

3) Cheap: If you happen to live in the USA or even Canada, there is likely a team close to you. I used to live very close to Portland, so the Portland Timbers were the team I followed. The tickets were cheap and the atmosphere was amazing when I went there as shown here.

do you guys mind if i come here and talk about the Argetinean league with myself?

That's fine, i'm the only one talking about MLS anyways. I know a lot of Argentinians are in MLS, with Diego Valeri being the Timber's star player.

Ok I am british and for some reason it's REALLY annoying seeing everyone call it soccer haha

tbh it's better than american football where from what i've seen, there's like five seconds of gameplay then 30 seconds analysis

You're also forgetting that American Football has endless commercials. When you watch soccer you know for a fact it's going to be two 45 minute stretches with a few minutes of extra time.

I always find it funny when people say soccer is super boring and then they get really into the world cup and then go back to saying soccer is boring.

Pretty much. I asked someone if they like soccer and they said no. I asked if they watched the world cup and they said yes. I then asked who they thought were the best 3 players, they could only name Tim Howard (although to be fair, he was the best out there for the USMNT.)

I can see how you would feel that way if there was no local soccer team near your area. Going to an actual match really convinced me that this was a sport that I enjoy. If you look at it from a perspective from a bunch of dudes prancing around waiting for a 0-0 draw, you're obviously going to be in for disappointment.

Basically, look at the sport in a different way, since it's understandably harder to follow in USA. American sports always have a winner in them whereas in Europeans see ties as more acceptable. Watching a random match between two teams from Zimbabwe or something probably won't catch your interest, that's understandable. Find a team you think you'd enjoy watching and follow them. Like any sport, finding a team to root for makes watching much more fun.

Why is this not about MLG

Yep! We have a really decent backing. We sell 3,000 tickets a game when it's not 40 and rainy out, and even then, most of the normal supporters still show. It's a good time.

Our main supporters' group for our local team stole a whole bunch of chants from PTFC, so I guess they're my favorite MLS team by default.

Detroit city FC? I heard they were actually decently popular over there despite being a 4th tier team.
