To strike a better balance between casual sub-communities, competitive players, and the capitalist overlords that decide if the site gets to live another day, I've been brainstorming an idea called
The Game Archive System
- At the end of a game, may "vote to archive"
- This vote passes if 1/3 of players vote to archive.
- An archived game is saved similarly to how they are now.
- If a game is archived, players can be reported for community violations.
- All ranked games are archived by default.
- If a game isn't archived, it is deleted forever and players cannot be reported for conduct in that game.
Example: During a sandbox game, someone is continuously using a slur that others are uncomfortable with. Players of that game vote to archive the game and later report the user for HC.
Alternatively, in another more private lobby where users do not care about language will have their game deleted with no record of it affecting the standing of the site.
Mods should have an option to "purge" a game from the archives to clear games with offensive language from the site.*
Lobby Settings
There can be settings that apply rules about this system to all games of that lobby.
Never archive games?
Games will never be saved when they're over.
Apply language filter?
If apply language filter is not checked, the options "Only allow unranked games?" and "Never archive games?" are locked to true. The option "Allow competitions?" is locked to false. These options are unlocked if the language filter is applied.
Footnote:
*Another idea I was thinking about was the approach 4chan recently implemented. Don't store saved games on the main site. This lets ads run on the main site while the archive site storing games with foul language doesn't get picked up.
None of what i suggested should be taken rigidly. Please do not hesitate to offer constructive criticism.
