Contest Ideas

about 6 years

All right, guys. Actual serious discussion time... mostly... I mean I'm not gonna be angry at joke comments, but like... even though due to certain events I might be leaving (keyword: might, there are complications), I really think EM is a place that could grow again and become better than ever.

I'd like to hold a mafia contest on Discord. Or multiple contests. With actual prizes, likely small monetary or steam game-based prizes. I had the idea of a tournament some time ago, but while I'm usually the ideas person of the group, I failed on that one. EM has too many ways to cheat the system. Even on Discord, you could multi-account.

So does anyone have ideas for a system that would be harder to cheat? When money's involved, and on a site as heartless as EM can sometimes be, the honor system just is not an option.

Let's get brainstorming!

Edit: To clarify, I wanted to run the contest from a Discord server, but the games would hopefully be on the site itself. If we can even make that work.

Sure! Send me your nudes and I'll make sure to use them responsibly. Contest purposes only. I'm a professional.

Make the prize my nudes.

That's true. Multiple advantages.

i see what you mean, it's a trade-off really. either the verification process is really detailed and cheating is near impossible, or there's no verification and cheating is extremely easy. honestly if we do use a lobby, it should weed out the people who aren't serious about competing in the first place, so the people who end up being approved should be decent players anyway

Yeah I guess that's true. I still hate the idea of an invasive verification process... but for those who don't mind that, it probably is the best option.

a password might not be enough because anyone could potentially comment/post the password somewhere. and then kicking people could get annoying.. idk, it'd be your call. i think a new lobby would work better because it'd be a lot easier to track who is participating, and you can approve people via discord before allowing them into the lobby.

We could do a special lobby or just password the game and kick anyone who somehow gets in but isn't verified. But honestly a lobby for just those games isn't the worst idea. So that they don't annoy people trying to just play ordinary games.

question: if the games are taking place on EM, how can you guarantee that anyone who happens to see the games doesn't just join in? as in, people who aren't 'verified' through discord. (maybe a special lobby just for these contests so you can approve who joins?)

Okay, my main idea here... is not really one I wanna use. But I guess it depends, because if it's the best option for making things fair, then... I guess it's still optional for people to join or not.

The idea is that each person could verify via Discord (probably not to me, as I'm not exactly trusted by many) who they are. Then give the name of the EM account they'll use for the contests/tournaments. Only verified accounts can participate.

It is a bit of a privacy/possibly safety risk, but... it would hopefully eliminate cheaters.

Yeah, a mod actually came to me and said they could help with that. But I think it would be an extra precaution. It's a little too easy to bypass.

This might, unfortunately, be the unanswerable question but if we can find a way to make this work (I'll keep thinking too) it could be really good for the site.

u could test for alts by getting people to tell you there Epicmafia account and mods could check to see if they're alts?

I mean, I like the idea. But people have alts. That's kind of the issue.

To avoid cheating you could organize it start-to-finish in real-time. That's what I did when I once hosted a mancala tournament and it concluded in less than 2 hours and everyone was entertained. I just gathered people in an open room cause Discord wasn't a thing back then.
