Plastic Straws are definitely harmful to the environment. The unique shape and composition of plastic straws means sea creatures are more likely to get harmed by coming into contact with a plastic straw compared to other plastic items. Additionally, the production of plastic straws creates excess waste. Many have advocated for a ban but there is definitely controversy.
Those who oppose the ban cite plastic straws being a very small percentage of ocean waste (0.3% is a number I see thrown around quite often but don't quote me on that) and that banning other plastic items such as disposable plastic bags would curb ocean waste on a much more significant scale. In fact, there are many disabled individuals who rely on bendy plastic straws as an important tool in consuming liquids and other more environmentally friendly alternatives do not work for them, which makes sense considering plastic straws were invented for use in a hospital setting.
Should we ban plastic straws? not ban them? require establishments to offer a choice between plastic and a more environmentally friendly option? lobby for funds to be put towards innovation of an environmentally straw that can be used by disabled people?
