I first thought of asking this in game, then in my personal thread, then thought of making this a thread of its own.
A little background: I attend Japanese classes at my uni, which have been an amazing experience so far. Some of you may have noticed me use random Japanese words in pre-game (I'm at that stage of language learning where you want to show everybody your skills or something. I'm not sure if monolinguals or even bilinguals understand what this is but I've noticed it happens for both me and my friends*), but this is nowhere near as bad compared to my coursemates. Example:
me: hey is there any homework?
weeb: yo, waddup. yup ! ! ☆.☆ i'll send it to you^^
When I first encountered this it seemed a little strange (I felt like it was 2005 back again). But then I noticed a lot of people in the course do it, which got me thinking if this was somehow related to the fact to the fact that they're all Japanese majors and therefore enjoy cutesy, kawaii stuff (I do wonder, though, which came first? Obsession with everything Japanese or with cute stuff?) Anyway has anyone else noticed this?
This also got me thinking about people's responses to different sorts of text speak. I think we can define this difference in two aspects:
- The usage of emoticons (and the nature of it as well, like is it smiley faces :) or emojis?)
- The language itself (how formal it is, how many lols there are)
So anyway how do you respond to people with different types of text speak? Are you put off, or does it fascinate you? I must say that I was at first weirded out but now I'm really intrigued by this phenomenon. Also, do you adapt new ways of text speak or do you tend to remain constant despite new trends?
Anyway, if you could answer these questions it'd be really informative and would allow me to form a better opinion on this. Thanks!
*for example, my mother has just entered hers with English and now inserts all of these "cool" English words into her sentences.
