I don't think you understand how much money it takes for a drug candidate to reach the market. It represented a fairly easy way of raising money for drug discovery/clinical development.

Also Daraprim was a second line treatment for pcp associated with hiv/aids, bactrim is the first-in-line treatment for that indication and is usually highly effective, so the total addressable market for daraprim was/is/remains significantly smaller than everybody made it out to be. The insurance companies pay the costs for the drugs. He also said if anyone couldn't afford the drug who needed it he would send it to them free of charge.
No one has named a single person who is unable to recieve the drug due to the price hike.
