A. Interpret the data you collected on earthquakes and volcanic activity this week. Does this data refute or support plate tectonic theory? Why?

B. Is there a difference between earthquakes and volcanoes in terms of what type of plate boundary they occur at?

I could not care less about geology, it's a gen ed. Please give me some key points I can turn into an essay and I'll love you forever

Olivine- Isolated Tetrahedron, Green, has magnesium or iron

Pyroxene- Single Chain Tetrahedron, Black, has magnesium or iron

Amphibole- Double Chain Tetrahedron, Black, has magnesium or iron.

Mica- Biotite and Muscovite, sheet tetrahedron formation, biotite has iron or magnesium whereas muscovite does not.

Quartz- 3D Tetrahedron formation, white or clear, lacks magnesium or iron.

These are silicates.

Is this right?

if there is anything else you gotta ask for your homework, ask here or in PMs I guess

if you need any homework help, except for like advanced math bc that is my worst subject, ask me

You are my new best friend!I will definitely ask you for geology help, I am kicking myself for doing all of my upper divisions before my gen eds, I just do NOT CARE about this stuff!

DreamGate says

1. it supports the theory because the volcanoes are the result of heat vents inside of mountains, which are created by land masses building on each other. earthquakes result from the friction of sliding force from the plates.

2. yes, as explained above. there are convergent boundaries (mountains, hills, and volcanoes), divergent boundaries (sea floor spreading, as well as sinkholes in some cases), and sliding boundaries (earthquakes)

The ideas of continents drift and sea-floor spreading helped to create the proofs behind the theory of plate tectonics. the sea floor is expanding in the Atlantic, and converging in the Pacific, which forms mountainous islands.

Thank you. F*ck everyone else who posted in this thread, with a GPA like mine I shouldn't have to pretend to care about things I don't.

I could not give a flying f*ck about this joke gen ed, I'm not going to be a scientist. It's a gen ed. I'm asking for the answers so I don't have to spend time I don't have contemplating something I don't care about and never will care about.

while you may not care about science, the scientific method and thinking skills you should learn in this class will help you no matter what you do. How are you going to interpret scientific data on like should you get a vaccine, should your company use X or Y item, etc.

i also encourage you to keep an open mind in general. I hated science myself, but I fell in love with it when I had to work in a lab during college. I changed my areas of interest completely in college

might need the data mate

You literally don't need the data to answer the questions, I should have removed the mention of data entirely, it's almost entirely irrelevant. It is asking how earthquakes support plate tectonic theory. It only mentions data at all to meet Colorado state gen ed requirements.

1. we don't have your data that you collected? I would probably say 1 week is too little data to prove/disapprove something like this

2. you can probably google where each occur if not your book

3. i doubt that there are many geologists on here to help but who knows

have fun writing this! The main job of scientists is to look things up, so you should try to do this on your own

In terms of scientific writing alone, it is important to think about all sides of the argument, list them all, and say why you think its only one of them

Something like the higher magnitudes correlating with deeper earthquakes supports the idea that earthquakes occur at subduction zones at convergent plate boundaries, and thus the overarching theory of plate tectonics? Does that sound right?

Well, we'd need the data

It's just a list of 8 earthquakes that occurred this week, the longitude and latitude, the depth, and the magnitude. The specific data is literally irrelevant to the questions, to my chagrin.
