theres a chinese saying 我是一个愚蠢的美国人. i believe the rough english translation is something along the lines of "what goes around comes around". keep being mean and see what happens
so I live in a pretty crappy college town, and as you might imagine, theres a pretty discernible amount of homeless people in my area.
there is one gent (who i am just going to call tom) that usually hangs outside of the 7-11 that i frequent, and he'd ask me for money every time he sees me. as a somewhat chubby guy with noodle arms, im pretty much at the bottom of the food chain in any situation involving physical confrontation so i generally comply to any requests for money. so generally giving him two dollars every time we bumped into each other became a part of my life that i eventually thought of as the "7-11 toll tax".
what was extremely amusing to me is that i noticed he started to ask for specific amounts of money. last year he would only ask if i had any spare change. but this semester, he started asking for specific amounts of money (usually 20 or 40 cents). and i think he started doing this knowing that ordinary people do not carry coins with them so they'd give him a dollar anyway. but also, you are generally expected to give to people in need. by requesting a certain number, he is giving you the option to exceed his expectations - which would probably make you feel good about yourself.
i guess i found it funny that hes using a strategy to ask for money. and i guess what im trying to say is...there are many forms of intelligence (like the one tom has demonstrated), and i do not think rote memorization (like in the video) is a useful indicator
