There are plenty of servers without items and "maps". Expert+ makes soft dropping faster, allows garbage denial by usage of combos and extends the sudden death timer. There might be few other things I missed. Overall, Expert rooms bring less "lag" and better gameplay.
The lobbies work well for me tho, I'm not sure what to say on this side.

Whats the difference between Expert rooms and just regular rooms? I dont remember much about arena but i just remember not liking the items + the mechanics of how it selects who youre targetting to send rows to or whatever. I dont remember specifics but I wouldn't mind playing Arena if the actual lobbies werent buggy as hell and if items weren't a thing
I used to be an avid 2P player myself, but I believe Arena is a much better competitive experience. Not only you get to play against real players (yes, in 2P you play against a game recording), but efficient downstacking involves strategical tetromino placement beforehand and I'm not even exaggerating here.
Have you tried playing on Expert+ mode? I feel it makes the game much smoother, as opposed to the regular mode.
You can try it yourself in Gold league (ranks 11-15) where you can usually find 1 or 2 Expert rooms. In Platinum (16 and above), there barely are non-expert rooms at all.
If you cannot find a suitable Expert room, you may always host one yourself and Practice for a bit while waiting for people to join!

i play mostly 2P (i peaked at like 18 or something) and marathon (on a good day i can get on the top 100 daily scores)
i have no idea how you can play arena the lobby and rooms are so buggy i have never been able to get that to work properly
