Examples

Solution: Stand Up Comedy (STAND going up, comma, "D". Stand up comedy.)

Solution: Eleanor Roosevelt ('L' in 'or', rows of 'elt')

A lot of rebuses are solved by sounding out the arrangement of the letters. You usually also type the phonetic solution in parentheses.

While Do Not Attempt To Sell Drugs is a good piece of advice, it doesn't really apply to this rebus. Are you sure you're looking at the format of the rebus properly? I've been hosting them as images so the formatting doesn't change how anyone views them:

The point of rebuses is to sound out the different position and layout of the letters to try to come up with the answer. In this case, the very left column is

D
N
A
T
S

This is the word "STAND" upside down. You can sound that out a couple of ways, but in this rebus it's meant to represent "STAND UP" because it's the word "STAND" going upward. The second column is simply a comma, which we can sound as by just saying "comma." The third column is the letter "D" which we can sound out by saying "D." If you combine that all together, you get "STAND up COMMA D" which phonetically is Stand Up Comedy. Hopefully that helps! It's not perfect but it's fun to try to figure out what the different layouts and orientations of the words are meant to sound out as.

Oh I get it. That's harder.

I don't think I really understand.

I thought it was going to be Do Not Attempt To Sell Drugs. How the heck is it stand up comedy? I see the letters for stand, but how does the D mean comedy? I'm mad that I don't understand these, and like my answer better

I thought about it for a bit but couldn't get it. After googling it that's pretty cute! I won't spoil it though
