DISCUSS: Host-kicking

over 7 years

What's your opinion on hosts kicking/banning players from their games? Is it something that can be easily abused? Should we have rules regarding host-kicking? I'd like your thoughts!

Should hosts be allowed to ban players from their games?

I feel like kicking a known troll or serial vegetable is okay, as well as games where a potential player did not previously reserve a spot, but a host shouldn't ban someone from a game for personal reasons or to save room for friends.

What do people think about kicking players pre-game who have quit/vegged in their games before? As every host knows it's very annoying when people quit or veg and don't even send you a message to apologise or to let you know at least!

I think since the host is the one putting in the effort of making the game and hosting it they should get easy say on who does/doesn't join

This.

banning should be allowed but not kicking. Just in my opinion I leave it at that.

i think anyone who has hosted has dealt with that one player who trolls/suicides or ruins the game, i think the host should be allowed to kick PREGAME as they already can, INGAME would be a backup if somehow a troll got in, but as the other peeps said, as long as you kick for a valid reason, rather then to host for friends or such, it should be partially allowed

Is there some way I can get the power without the responsibility? the thought of kicking people gives me a stiffy but having to host is a major turn off

Ultimately I think the host is taking their time to host and should have the right to reserve judgment if they believe a player is going to be too much of a headache to deal with that it is going to be unpleasant for them. I've had a player destroy a game on me and while I wouldn't want him to get a lobby ban for it or anything I would very much prefer to not have him back in my games. That's just one example.

The only time I've ever done or seen it done it was for toulals (marcolem) when he was in the lobby, or a super obvious troll, so i feel like it is used correctly. I dont think i've ever seen a host abuse it, so I think it would be counter-productive to ban it.

I think it's something that shouldn't be taken lightly, but also not something that should be banned outright. As the poll says, it depends entirely on the reasoning. I believe the reasoning should be game related, and not personal. There are people I have asked not to join the games I host, because they are serial suiciders and have ruined many of my games (lack of jury vote, lack of HoH tiebreaker etc). I probably wouldn't kick these people if they joined a game, but i'd be hella tempted to, and I don't think that's particularly unfair on my part. However I wouldn't kick someone I disliked purely because I have a personal issue with them. I host because I want people to enjoy the game, and my own personal issues with people really shouldn't affect that.

If someone is kicking people because the table isn't big enough and they have friends who are joining, I think it would be better to remake with a larger table where possible. Additionally if the game is reserved I think it's perfectly reasonable to kick people who haven't reserved.

I guess one way to solve this would be for hosts to make clear in advance who they will not have at their table and the reason why. This could be awkward, but would avoid any future complaints against that host/player.

I will also say, that given the marcolem cheating incidents of late, I know a lot of hosts are becoming really wary of new players, and have adopted a strategy whereby they kick noavi's, or new players who created their accounts very recently. I think as a community we need to come together and find a better way of handling this, because we are inevitably going to lose players if we don't welcome them into their initial games.

(sorry for the rant)

i think the feature is important and good for purposes of expelling trolls and abusive players from joining games etc.

i also think that at the end of the day the host of the game is the one who has put heaps of effort into their game, so should at least have a say who participates in it. in saying that, it should also be avoided as much as possible to kick newer players in favour of older players/friends to at least let the community grow and avoid remaining stagnant with the same people every game
