Mood Disorders & Therapy

deletedover 7 years

I feel like it's stupid to google this when there's probably a few people on here who could answer this question from experience.

After getting diagnosed by a doctor for a psychiatric disorder like depression or anxiety, do you have to do talk therapy in order to continue to get medicine? How does that all work? Does it depend how bad it is?

My friend has been thinking about going to the doctors lately but s/he had a traumatic experience with a psychologist when s/he was a pre-teen. S/he doesn't mind seeing one temporarily but not as a long-term treatment plan. S/he would rather not even get help.

Thanks.

When I'm sad I compulsively buy things I don't need and make Gerry upset at me because of it. Works every time

Great news! My friend woke up this morning, got out of bed (which, wow, hasn't been that easy since out of the womb,) and did some yoga. After that, they took a long walk. Felt so good that they strolled all the way through the projects. Suddenly, they don't want to kill them selves anymore.

Well, only when coming down from the heroin...

You should try drinking or abusing some other kind of drug as an escape. It's hard to be sad about silly things in your head when you can't think straight!

What ice said, if you don't want to get better, no medication or therapist is gonna help.

Haven't read anything but the op so apologies if I'm reiterating points. Just realised what I wrote isn't even relevant, oh well.

Best way is to use medication as a crutch to allow you to do the things that naturally keep you in a good mood eg: exercise, getting sun, eating properly, socialising etc.

If there are underlying problems then go to a therapist or talk with a close friend. I never got on well with therapists but I've sorted most of my problems out with a friend, we kinda helped each other identify the fundamental issues and develop strategies to cope with or minimise insecurities. Doing things alone is so much tougher.

Bottom line is you have to want to get better. Sitting around taking meds isn't going to help. You have to remember that life can be really good and it's never hopeless or too late to turn it around. Sure it may take weeks or in my case months but in the end it's all worth it.

Or getting high as duck....

It's okay d3x whatever works for you. But don't invalidate people who can't find relief in yoga or daily walks
