Your brain doesn't see what it doesn't expect to see
Your brain will find meaning wherever it can
Your brain makes assumptions, especially when you think you're an expert.
Your brain does some things automatically, despite your best efforts
Your brain has a great difficulty ignoring context (e.g meta)
Once seen, context cannot be 'unseen'
Your brain interprets information in light of information it already has
Your brain will look to confirm what it already thinks or wants to think - even though information opposite to what you believe can be just as useful
Your brain will do almost anything to justify its decisions (even terrible ones)
And this is constantly happening because:
- Your evidence is often highly ambiguous
- You lack strong objective of what you're looking for
- You try to weave together context when they can all be null as independent events
- You have a hugely inflated ego, and despite me saying this you still can't deny it
- You don't identify and/or rectify your mistakes
Perhaps these faults occur because of:
- You are sometimes forced to make 'yes or no' decisions in a short time frame.
- You are under pressure from your fellow team
- You are a natural conformer to the norm
- Emotions towards people can heavily influence decision making
What experienced players do:
- Filter out irrelevant information
- Simplify information
- Utilize past experience
- Do things more quickly
However, this comes at a cost.
In fact, players that are more experienced are more likely to succumb to these prejudices/bias despite not realising that are even more susceptible:
- They are even more automatic
- Decision are less easily articulated
- They are expected to know more
- Instead of using the fundamental reasoning, they try to use more extraneous factors.
- They make more 'snap' judgements
So, what can you do about this?
- Be aware? - not enough on it's own
- Ask a friend to play with you and critique you after? - no because you will change your style and try harder
- Ask a friend to review a game before you read this post? - of course
- Just stop using meta? - well there are cases where its unavoidable
Conclusion
- Until you can overcome these habits, you will never be a 'great' EM player.
