RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40K.

Manage colonists' moods, needs, individual wounds, and illnesses. Engage in small-team tactical gunplay. Fashion structures, weapons, and apparel from metal, wood, stone, cloth, or futuristic materials. Fight pirate raiders, hostile tribes, rampaging animals, giant tunnelling insects and ancient killing machines. Tame and train cute pets, productive farm animals, and deadly attack beasts. Watch colonists develop relationships with family members, lovers, and spouses. Discover a new generated world each time you play. Build colonies in the desert, jungle, tundra, and more. Manage quirky colonists with unique backstories, traits, and skills.

RimWorld is not designed as a competitive strategy game, but as a story generator. It's not about winning and losing - it's about the drama, tragedy, and comedy that goes on in your colony. The game creates events like pirate raids, trader arrivals, and storms. But these events aren't random. RimWorld uses an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story.


After playing RimWorld for about 5 hours now I've decided it would be a lot of fun to create a colony named after Sandbox users and tell the tales of them trying to survive with each other. This thread is for both signups and when I eventually create the game I'll be hosting the storytelling here too. So if you're interested in being a character in my game, just post below in the following format:

  • Name
  • What gender you would like to be (Male, Female or Either)

The colony will start with only three people, but gradually over time others will join or be recruited. If you aren't picked for the starting three - don't worry as you may be chosen when more people join. As a sidenote, characters cannot be customised so your character might not necessarily look like you and may have traits that aren't like you at all - these will have been randomly selected by the game.

The poor guy is laying in shock on the ground in "extreme" pain. He dies from blood loss in 11 hours. Better get to work building that prison.

A fat, nude man strolls up to the colony and decides he's joining. He's a pyromaniac which does not fare well for the rest of the colony. His name is RealWalter.

Jamal researches microelectrics whilst a room to house solar batteries is built.

Ben provides some medical aid to squirrel-ravaged NotWalter.

Jamal decides a good final resting place for the squirrel is the pile of rocks that we throw out behind our base.

But sustains a few injuries in the process...

NotWalter deals with the squirrel menacing our colony.

NotWalter hollows out some more mountain so that we can build a proper storage unit, Ben plants some rice and Jamal carries on building the workshop.

Since we're asleep, the "friendly" visitors decide to help themselves to some of our food.

The colony sleeps whilst the visitors wander around outside the house in the cold.

Since the colonists get very unhappy at eating without a table and chairs, Jamal and NotWalter decide to set one up in the new rec room.
