essential hip-hop

debaserabout 10 years ago

which hip-hop albums would you consider essential to a hip-hop listener today?

btw there is no release date requirement, think of this thread as a "beginner's guide to hip-hop" thing

labor days and none shall pass were easily my favorites though. going to listen to none shall pass again too

his newest album is pretty great honestly, it has the same ridiculousness of his lyrics and his incredible flow from Labor Days but sounds a little more modernized musically. it's basically a reflection of his state of mind in 2016 and I enjoy it a lot

listening 30 seconds into Daylight i already remember why this guy is one of the best

amazing how much Labor Days holds up too for an album made 15 years ago. the production sounds like it could have been made within the last 4 years and even though rap music in 2001 was way more evolved than the mid 90s he was still ahead of his time lyrically imo

i haven't really listened to any of his newer albums, I wonder if they're any good
Simsabout 10 years ago
i can see that. aesop rock is an absolute genius when it comes to his flow and playing around with syllable counts. he's one of the most talented rappers just based on how masterful his flow is. i don't remember too much about the actual content of his lyrics though, gonna give labor days another listen because I'm curious

Labor Days is also his best album

Labor Days is just as good as Madvillainy, in my eyes, but for different reasons

kendrick is up there with Nas biggie and tupac for me as the GOAT and i am not afraid to argue that

labor days is an amazing album that holds up really well. very niche but it really showed aesop rock's talent as a lyricist

I think Kendrick's last two albums go without saying when it comes to essential modern hip hop

doom is a great lyricist but sometimes i feel like his flow is intentionally hard to listen to. imo it's why operation doomsday is more recognized than madvillainy

I just tried embedding pics of some other influential albums but it didn't work so

Ready to Die - The Notorious B.I.G

All Eyez on Me - 2Pac

Black on Both Sides - Most Def

The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem

and my favorite niche classic

Aesop Rock - Labor Days

unpopular opinion: if Kanye wasn't obsessed with autotune he'd be a top 5 producer of the last 5 years
agreed, his production on Jay's the Black Album is actually insane

No dooms output is just as great as madlibs, his lyricism is top quality
agreed, but I kinda feel like Shacky when it comes to DOOM, he's a fantastic artist with incredibly witty lyrics but he's sort of niche. The only reason I'd go with Madvillainy over the insane number of great albums that MF DOOM has out is because of Madlib's production
Simsabout 10 years ago
i am fat and ready to die like biggie so that album is the GOAT

If Kanye went back to his roots in college dropout instead of just using his albums to promo people related to his label, ditching the maximalist mentality that only worked on mbdtf because it was a focused vision, unlike his last two albums he'd be a top 5 producer in the last 5 years

madlib works wonders on samples but i think he's kind of restricted by them. i haven't heard him produce a song that didn't sample something else, but he very may well have, i'm not a madlib expert

I think what really makes Madvillainy an essential album is moreso madlib's production than it is MF DOOM, as much as I love DOOM as a lyricist and artist
Simsabout 10 years agoedited
dangerdoom is also underrated and danger mouse is an all time great music producer, not exclusive to rap
Simsabout 10 years ago
j dilla is probably the most influential rap producer of all time

My controversial opinion is that I like piñata more than madvillainy if only by a slight margin
