but if i were to start watching an anime and i've watched almost nothing before, what should i watch?
and by almost nothing, i mean like other than the most basic, americanized crap (pokemon, a little sailor moon, etc) and the only "real" anime i've watched is deadman wonderland.
i wonder why everyone is recommending eva...? unless you're into psychological anime with loads of allusions and layers where you'll have to watch it multiple times to understand, don't start with it. mawaru penguindrum is the same except the allusions are more obscure and subtle.
i remember you liked person of interest? so maybe baccano or steins;gate
(but seriously ouran and fma are the perfect place to start imo. or haruhi suzumiya, if youre into comedy)
as for danganronpa, play the games, don't watch the anime. The anime is a summary that takes off a lot of things that were actually important in the game, and you don't even get to get attached to many characters, while in the game you were at least a bit more likely.
full metal alchemist or neon genesis evangelion are pretty good to start with.
shingeki no kyojin, while not really one i'd reccomend to people that already watch anime, has turned a alot of people into watching anime so maybe its a good one to start with.
First couple episodes are okayish. Once you get to around episode 10, it gets ridiculously dumb. The main protagonist is this overpowered 14 year old who is apparently indestructible and knows how to do anything... except for saving thousands of lives by escaping the game. I dropped at episode 15. Plot jumped around too much in time, and characters pass away before I even feel any emotional attachment to them.

what's the deal with sao why does everyone hate it
Shinji has one of us most unique personalities I have ever seen in an anime. He is a socially awkward, traumatized child going through all sorts of "events" in life, questioning: his personal identity; the significance of one's death whether unknown, loved, or hated by Shinji; and why things have to exist in reality (and how they can). It's all a mind game for Shinji, which is fitting when either people are alive and betray Shinji, or people love Shinji but are dead.
Although Steins;Gate is disputed as one of the best anime ever created (my personal favorite), I would not recommend watching it until you have experienced a couple other anime beforehand. If you watched Steins;Gate first, then every other anime would just seem crap to you.
You should watch all of this i guess also don't watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. You will cringe at shinji and its not for new people. This is the best selection of anime because you they are really good anime that will start your journey. Danganronpa is interesting though. If you are a gamer or have money to spare pick up Danganronpa on steam before you watch the anime so it doesnt spoil. There is so much more to the game then the anime so if you have any sort of interest in danganronpa buy the game
