Cheating and ban duration updates

almost 8 years

We've made the following changes to the rules.

Cheating rule

  • Cheating across multiple games in competitive mafia incurs an instant 4 month lobby ban and ineligibility to trophy for 8 months.
  • Cheating across multiple games in ranked (red heart) games incurs a one week lobby ban.

In both instances a cheating 1st violation is given.

Maximum ban duration

The maximum ban length is now 3 months in all normal cases of rule breaking. The mod team reserves the right to issue longer bans for particularly malicious behavior, such as OPI and posting X-rated content. Violations lengths have not changed. If you're wondering how this works, read the following.

  • For violations that last up to 3 months, nothing changes.
  • For violations up to 6 months, the ban is applied for 3 months and then lifted. The user will have N violations where N is the number required for a ban, but will be unbanned. Upon receiving another violation of the same type, he will be banned for another 3 months. When the second ban expires, the user can have at most N-1 violations of this type and things are normal.
  • Violations longer than 6 months will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

These changes are a shift to a more reformational, correctional way of enforcing rules. In particular, giving users who have cheated in red heart games a week to reflect on their actions feels a lot more reasonable to us than an immediate half-year ban. When it comes to shorter ban durations, the idea is that most people view 3 months or longer as simply "a long period of time," and are not disincentivized from breaking the rules because they will be banned for 6 months rather than 3 months.

We believe that these changes will lead to lower bypassing rates and less cheating on the site.

Why does this not apply to the people who were banned before the update? And why did my ban time extend from "to be unbanned june 2016" to july? Never once did I even bypass. Regardless of the reason, I wasn't even notified of the change.

"Cheating across multiple games" should probably be "Cheating," period. Yes, I'm behind on the times, but this is stupid.

Back in EM1 you only got suspended 24 hours for cheating 1 single game in redhearts. I know since as a noob I got suspended 24 hours by nikoscook just for doing that(I even admitted it ingame).

i thought there weren't even mods in EM1?? Wasn't that late 2.0

Oh perhaps it was. Whenever we had that big old cheating thread atleast where every report was posted, thats when I got my first ban.

That was like March or April 2011 if i'm not mistaken! So I guess that's 3.0

no there were only mods in EM 3.0 when everything reset , it was during the round Orbneko and Nihao were both running and EM 3.0 came right at the same time. also its always been the case that if you cheated more than once youd get banned, so...

he wasn't saying cheating more than once shouldn't or hasn't been punished with a ban - he was saying cheating in general (even once) has and should be

take away bans. that way no one will bypass.

he has a point, people will cheat and bypass regardless of the ban length

You really should spend some time in the banned user chats, it's rather eye opening.

That's madness who wants to PLAY a game when you can TROLL the game.

id mostly kinda agree with what discordia is arguing because the people that are truly 'malicious' are going to bypass regardless of the time period

HOWEVER, you need to have a punishment that deters people from doing the crime

if I can gt and get unbanned in less than a month for it (after several gamethrows, mind you), then what is going to stop me from doing it?

3 months is a fine time, its a decent enough period that people think the punishment is not worth the crime

also, people do not bypass because they don't believe people have the right to exert their authority over them, lol. they bypass because they want want to play the game for some reason
