NoaviPolic is right. Red heart games rarely teach anything but simple mechanics. 1000 games fp wont make you any better in comp (ex: me).
I suggest announcing comp setups earlier, -so that may be winner chooses for the 2nd next round, not the one just after-, and if you want to join comp you need to play at least X times of comped setups in red heart.

I don't think anything is wrong however with the 1500 point mark for Comp. New players really can't learn the game playing Classic, FP and G&H but no other red heart games will fill.
At 1500 points players have a decent grasp of the game and can take the skills they've learn from FP and start to learn the better setups.
It's a learning curve

That's a valid point Jepo, but from my experience I find the ratio of experienced players to newbies in Comp is a lot higher.
Perhaps the real "solution", per se, is to increase the entry barrier to playing Comp mafia?
I don't feel like competitive being "serious games", when 90% of the room is filled with people who just reached 1000 points playing nothing but fancy pants.

Competitive mafia exists for those who want to play serious games.
There will always be new players in red heart games but don't discriminate. Give them a chance and help them to improve.
