u guys know english so im gonna inquire about this problem

"Despite running is his favourite hobby, he doesn't win at races." - this sentence is obviously incorrect.

Now you want to correct it by doing necessary changes, I did this:

"Despite running being his favourite hobby, he doesn't win at races."

but my teacher said it's wrong and what you really should do is replace despite with although.

I wanna make sure he's not wrong and im not right

Teacher wanted you to say:

"Although running is his favourite hobby, he doesn't win at races."

But you did:

"Despite running being his favourite hobby, he doesn't win at races"

Now, they both work. but Although is the one that made less changes in the sentence, even though Despite works too.

You changed "is" with "being", even though it doesn't matter that much, but that is the teachers' job, and what they're told to do.

although running is or despite running being, either one works in conversation. i don't know about proper english though. teach might have been wanting you to make the correction using the smallest number of changes
