if a locomotive is hurtling towards a trio of men tied to the track and you have the ability to divert it onto a section of track upon which a single man is bound should you do it

Watch three men die or kill one man?

You can't put any stipulations of emotions or knowledge of the people that kind of ruins it.

I think a funnier one would be, You are shot back in time before hitler came to power with your father, bestfriend and a stranger. You are put in the same situation the three people tied together is hitler, your father, best friend then the one alone is the stranger

3 people on 1 track

1 person on other track

but 1 of those 3 people kissed your mother on the lips

now decide

Oh yeah, regarding the actual topic of the thread, my choice would depend on the people involved. A single death close to the heart hurts more than a million deaths on the other side of the world.

There's actually a little bit of math study on infinites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleph_number

Thanks i'll read it, but what i was trying to say was coming from this quote: “Problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.” -Albert Einstein. Life as we know it is immeasurable and we humans lack the faculties to understand some things. I don't think you can say 3 lives are more important or more valuable than 1 life because there are too many things involved.

Here's a funny thought. Is one infinity bigger than another and can you really say infinity times 3 is bigger than infinity or is the end result simply infinity. See where i'm going with this?

Would that single man's mother's grief be lesser than those three other men's mothers' grief?

Statistically, it is more likely that the combined grief of three mothers' is greater than that of one mother, yes.

Belovedprincess, I think your answer is code for, "I'd be at a loss and do nothing, thus letting three idiots die when I could have killed one idiot instead, which is mathematically the more moral thing to do."

Speaking of math, some people are really bad at it. I think it's society's fault. (I could mention overpopulation here, but I have a feeling someone would take me seriously, so I'm typing this sentence instead.)

In all seriousness my first answer is definitely "I'd change it," but then again, I have vegged in games before because I took too long to vote on lylo.

This hypothetical is lopsided. We need a new b.s. abstract conundrum. plz & ty

the only constant factor in the situation is yourself, so you should just do whatever makes yourself feel satisfied

My answer is that I would never be in this situation, and so I don't need an answer, and can go on not being insane.
deletedover 9 years
Don't attempt to evaluate the lives of strangers, it will only serve to drive you insane. Haven't any of you seen the Dark Knight--the boat full of cons vs. the boat full of 'decent' people? Pray to Batman, or God, or someone.

i would pull it so that i can fool myself into thinking i have control over the situation
