people took themselves seriously on most message boards pre '00... they were there for information sharing. most boards were specific to a certain type of preoccupation... not everyone and their dog had internet access at home, so there wasnt as much incentive to casually socialize (every concerned house-wife told their kids not to chat on aol because they thought everyone else chatting there was actually a pedo) but '03? idk. things changed really fast. it was all a blur.... after the Y2k hype, i remember a lot of trolling centered around that... and after everyone felt safe using a computer bc y2k wasnt going to cause the world to end... just about everyone was online.
Mainly how they differ to our current communities, as Dan said it his were much more about discussion rather than memes as it is before the creation of sites like 4chan newgrounds and youtube. Obviously back then the internet wasnt as ingrained in our culture as it is now so it must have attracted a certain type of user and I was wondering how the communities functioned and how active they were because I am reading about them now and they sound interesting.

I know a lot about this but you're negging my posts so you can do one.
I wasn't alive in 2003, sorry
maybe I'm wrong, who knows.
i used to post on GameTalk when I was like 10 which was around 2002.
I'd say old internet communities were less meme-oriented and posts were typically more well-constructed instead of just back and forth short lines like you see now and elsewhere.
It was more about a discussion and information and less about joking around.
